‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Polymer materials are widely used in modern designs of spacecraft (SC). On their basis different temperature-control coatings, special thin-film elements, etc. The disadvantage of the polymers is their low resistance to atomic oxygen, which is a major component of the Earth's atmosphere at altitudes of 200-800 km. Therefore, for low-orbit satellites operating in this altitude range, an extremely urgent problem is to protect the device on the surface of polymeric materials from the damaging effects of atomic oxygen flow.    Currently used two basic approaches to solving this problem: coating the surface of a material resistant to oxygen and coating material by introducing a modification in its surface layers of solid particles that create a barrier that prevents penetration of oxygen into the deeper layers of polymer. We have previously shown that the introduction into the polymer matrix of the oxide particles with a diameter of 30-100 nm ~ at a concentration of 5-30% mass loss allowing reduce modified samples when exposed to atomic oxygen at 10-15% [1].   However, in order to achieve higher stability of modified samples, further studies on the physico-chemical mechanisms that reduce the intensity of the process of erosion of the surface of the polymer, and the creation of more efficient technologies modification of polymers.   In this work, addition polymers modified by introducing a step of manufacturing the solid nano and microparticles was studied the possibility of creating on the surface of the protective layer by bombardment with particles of solid samples velocities ~ 0.5-3 km / s.

Zaman N., Li Y., Zheng T. et al., Journal of Materials Chemistry A 2026 Vol. 14 No. 25 P. 15971–15983
Interface engineering plays a critical role in determining the performance of lead sulfide (PbS) colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells. Defects and surface states at the PbS–electron transport layer (ETL) interface critically govern charge extraction and recombination processes. ZnMgO nanoparticles are widely employed as ETLs due to their high electron mobility and facile synthesis; however, ...

Reinforcement learning for accelerator beamline control: A simulation-based approach
Ibrahim A., Petrenko A., Kaledin M. et al., International Journal of Modern Physics E 2026 Vol. 35 No. 07 Article 2641027
Particle accelerators play a pivotal role in advancing scientific research, yet optimizing beamline configurations to maximize particle transmission remains a labor-intensive task requiring expert intervention. In this work, we introduce reinforcement learning for accelerator beamline control (RLABC), a Python-based library that reframes beamline optimization as a reinforcement learning (RL) problem. Leveraging the Elegant simulation framework, ...

Optimization of the Accelerator Control by Reinforcement Learning: A Simulation-Based Approach
Ibrahim A., Derkach D., Petrenko A. et al., Physics of Particles and Nuclei 2025 Vol. 56 No. 6 P. 1476–1481
Optimizing accelerator control is a critical challenge in experimental particle physics, requiring significant manual effort and resource expenditure. Traditional tuning methods are often time-consuming and reliant on expert input, highlighting the need for more efficient approaches. This study aims to create a simulation-based framework integrated with Reinforcement Learning (RL) to address these challenges. Using \texttt{Elegant} ...

Footprints of loop extrusion in statistics of intra-chromosomal distances: An analytically solvable mode
Belan S., Parfenyev V., Journal of Chemical Physics 2024 Vol. 160 No. 12 Article 124901
Active loop extrusion—the process of formation of dynamically growing chromatin loops due to the motor activity of DNA–binding protein complexes—is a firmly established mechanism responsible for chromatin spatial organization at different stages of a cell cycle in eukaryotes and bacteria. The theoretical insight into the effect of loop extrusion on the experimentally measured statistics of ...

Theory of self-coacervation in semi-dilute and concentrated zwitterionic polymer solutions
Yury A. Budkov, Petr E. Brandyshev, Nikolai N. Kalikin, Soft Matter 2023 Vol. 19 P. 3281–3289
Based on the random phase approximation, we develop a molecular theory of self-coacervation in zwitterionic polymer solutions. We show that the interplay between the volume interactions of the monomeric units and electrostatic correlations of charged groups on a polymer backbone can result in liquid-liquid phase separation (self-coacervation). We analyse the behavior of the coacervate phase ...

Mukhangali S., Neplokh V., Kochetkov F. et al., Applied Physics Letters 2022 No. 121 Article 243504
This paper demonstrates an elastic (i.e., both flexible and stretchable) pixel matrix based on the patterned films of single-walled carbon nanotubes, which were obtained using optical lithography and plasma etching. The proposed elastic electrodes maintain their initial resistivity at 10% stretching. We also demonstrate an application of the elastic pixel matrix to an array of ...

Российская химия: движение вперед или бег на месте?
Krukov V. A., Silkin V., Токарев А.

These polycations differ in their polymer geometries, protonation states, and ...

To this end, we employ atomic-scale molecular dynamics simulations to explore adsorption of several linear cationic polymers of different chemical structure and protonation (polyallylamine (PAA), polyethylenimine (PEI), polyvinylamine (PVA), and poly-l-lysine (PLL)) on ...

Tyutnev A. P., Saenko V. S., Aleksey D. Zhadov et al., Polymers 2020 Vol. 12 No. 628 P. 1–10
Abstract: We have performed comparative numerical calculations using a multiple trapping (MT) formalism with an exponential and an aggregate two-exponential trap distributions for describing two mostly used experimental setups for studying the radiation-induced conductivity (RIC) and the time-of-flight (TOF) effects. Computations have been done for pulsed and long-time electron-beam irradiations in a small-signal regime. Predictions of these two approaches ...

Abstract: Polymer dielectrics subjected to intense radiation fluxes exhibit a radiation-induced conductivity (RIC). Polyimide is a good dielectric with excellent mechanical and thermal properties featuring high radiation resistance currently widely used in the spacecraft industry. Its RIC has been extensively studied in several laboratories. The purpose of the present study is to make a direct measurement of the RIC ...
