How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

A simplified approach to predicting thermal expansion anisotropy of solids from first principles: application to the orthorhombic phase of Mo2C
Dmitry Vasilyev, Gorev V., Ikhsanov R. et al., Journal of Materials Science 2026 No. 61 P. 25452–25470
The orthorhombic phase of 𝛼-Mo2 C is a key component in electrocatalytic applications, as Mo2C-based catalysts can exhibit catalytic performance comparable to or exceeding that of noble metals. Despite its technological relevance, theoretical understanding of the anisotropy in the thermal expansion and related thermoelastic properties of 𝛼-Mo2 C remains limited. In this work, first-principles calculations ...

Thermal expansion path, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of C14 Fe2Nb Laves phase calculated using density functional theory
Dmitry Vasilyev, Gorev V., Physica B: Condensed Matter 2025 Vol. 699 Article 416850
Thermal expansion anisotropy, elastic, thermal and thermodynamic properties of C14 Fe2Nb Laves phase have been studied using first-principles based quasi-harmonic Debye - Grüneisen approximation. The search for thermal expansion was carried out by a new simplified method, which allows to reduce the problem to a one-dimensional case. The electronic, vibrational and magnetic subsystems were taken ...

Advanced Materials: Nature of Strongly Correlated Quantum Spin Liquid in Sr3CuNb2O9
Shaginyan V. R., Msezane A. Z., Artamonov S. et al., Advanced Materials & Sustainable Manufacturing 2025 Vol. 2 No. 1 Article 10001
Quantum spin liquids of frustrated magnets are among the most attractive and basic systems in physics. Frustrated magnets exhibit exceptional properties as insulators and metals, making them advanced materials that represent materials for future technologies. Therefore, a reliable theory describing these materials is of great importance. The fermion condensation theory provides an analytical description of ...

High-speed optical-waveguide integrated single-walled carbon nanotube bolometer
An P. P., V. V. Kovalyuk, Y. G. Gladush et al., Applied Physics Letters 2024 Vol. 125 No. 20 Article 201101
The rapid development of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and their applications in various fields of science and technology requires the creation of easy-to-manufacture high-speed integrated detectors. In this work, we fabricated and studied planar waveguide-integrated bolometers based on a thin film of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on the silicon nitride platform. This bolometer showed good ...

Ultra spin liquid in Lu(3)Cu(2)Sb(3)O(14)
Shaginyan V. R., Msezane A. Z., Artamonov S. et al., EPL 2021 Vol. 136 (2021) No. 17003 Article 17003
We analyze recent measurements of C⁄T , specific heat C divided by temperature T , of recently observed ultra spin liquid. The measurements are carried out in magnetic fields on the triangular lattice compound Lu3Cu2Sb3O14. We show that the obtained heat capacity Cmag formed by ultra spin liquid as a function of temperature T versus ...
