The global credit crisis of 2008-2010 and the current threat of spreading debt problems in the Eurozone have underscored the urgency of reforming the international monetary system. There are two approaches of greatest interest in matters related to the creation of a new international reserve currency. The first one is based on the replacement of the dollar by an existing currency or currencies. The second approach concerns the possibility of going back to the past and using “artificial” currencies.
