HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

GWAS of depression in 4,520 individuals from the Russian population highlights the role of MAGI2 (S-SCAM) in the gut-brain axis

Frontiers in Genetics. 2023. Vol. 13. P. 972196–972196.
Pinakhina D., Yermakovich D., Vergasova E., Kasyanov E., Rukavishnikov G., Rezapova V., Kolosov N., Sergushichev A., Popov I., Kovalenko E., Ilinskaya A., Kim A., Plotnikov N., Ilinsky V., Neznanov N., Mazo G., Kibitov A., Rakitko A., Artomov M.

We present the results of the depression Genome-wide association studies study performed on a cohort of Russian-descent individuals, which identified a novel association at chromosome 7q21 locus. Gene prioritization analysis based on already known depression risk genes indicated MAGI2 (S-SCAM) as the most probable gene from the locus and potential susceptibility gene for the disease. Brain and gut expression patterns were the main features highlighting functional relatedness of MAGI2 to the previously known depression risk genes. Local genetic covariance analysis, analysis of gene expression, provided initial suggestive evidence of hospital anxiety and depression scale and diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders scales having a different relationship with gut-brain axis disturbance. It should be noted, that while several independent methods successfully in silico validate the role of MAGI2, we were unable to replicate genetic association for the leading variant in the MAGI2 locus, therefore the role of rs521851 in depression should be interpreted with caution.

Background. The phenomenon of perception of the disease is of interest to modern specialists in the field of psychogastroenterology due to the fact that it largely determines the course and outcome of therapeutic interventions. A promising line of research in this direction is to study how the perception of the disease, its causes and consequences ...

The protective role of vigor in volunteering against somatic and psychological symptoms in EMDR therapists
Alena A. Zolotareva, Julia S. Vitko, Elena V. Kazennaya, Psychology in Russia: State of the Art 2026 Vol. 19 No. 1 P. 96–108
Background. Empirical evidence highlights that psychotherapists and applied psychologists experience stress, anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, secondary traumatic stress, and other symptoms of somatic and psychological distress. Although studies suggest that volunteering can protect somatic and psychological well-being in the general population, these relationships have not been investigated in mental health professionals. Objective. This study aimed to examine the ...

Background Alcohol use disorder (AUD) significantly affects over 200 health conditions, causing about 3 million deaths annually worldwide and is approximately 50 % heritable. Methods We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on self-reported alcohol consumption and alcohol-related challenges (AUDIT score) in a large East Slavs cohort (N = 41,575). Genetic correlations with diverse phenotypes were assessed, and a polygenic risk ...

What Is a “Healthy” Balance Between Students' Involvement in Curricular and Extracurricular Activities? Evidence From a Highly Selective Russian University
Maloshonok N., Shcheglova I., Dremova O., European Journal of Education 2025 Vol. 60 No. 3 Article e70138
Although many researchers and policy-makers emphasise the benefits of extracurricular involvement, others state that intense extracurricular involvement might be harmful to students' achievements and development. This paper aims to estimate the “healthy” time proportion between curricular and extracurricular activities at university and what patterns of their combination with students' activities outside of campus can positively ...

Easterbrook M., Grigoryan L., Smith P. et al., Social Psychological and Personality Science 2025 Vol. 16 No. 7 P. 780–791
We investigate whether the social cure properties of groups vary across cultures, testing hypotheses that the associations between multiple group memberships (MGM) and depressive symptoms will (a) be mediated by social support and uncomfortable normative pressures, and (b) vary systematically with sample-level relational mobility. Analyses of data from a survey (N = 5,174) conducted within k = 29 ...

Rukavishnikov G., Rakitko A., Kasyanov E. et al., European Psychiatry 2022 Vol. 65 No. S1 P. 556–556
Introduction Because of different phenotypic approaches, data on depression prevalence is variable and controversial. Objectives The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of different depressive phenotypes in the Russian population (DSM criteria based self-report vs HADS questionnaire). Methods The data was from the on-line survey of 5116 clients of Genotek Ltd. (males - 50,63%; age - Me=35 (Q1-30;Q3-42)). The survey ...

Contemporary genome-wide association studies in depression: the critical role of phenotyping
Kasyanov E. D., Rakitko A.S., Rukavishnikov G. V. et al., Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology 2022 Vol. 52 No. 6 P. 826–835
The need to use large cohorts to identify genetic risk loci for mental disorders has led to the dilemma of phenotyping quality. This dilemma is particularly relevant to mental disorders common in the population, such as depression (prevalence throughout life up to 16.2%). On the one hand, there is the very resource-consuming method of acquiring ...
