Towards a Sustainable Future: Evaluating Green Sukuk in Indonesia and the UAE
This chapter evaluates the commitment and progress undertaken by two prominent Muslim countries, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on using Green Sukuk as the sustainable source of financing the future. This evaluation is essential in consideration that Indonesia issued the world’s first Sovereign Green Sukuk whilst UAE albeit new to the Green Sukuk market, has issued several notable issuances within the last few years. Among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, UAE was also the first to establish a Framework for Federal bonds and Sukuk issuances to help develop its primary and secondary financial markets.
Therefore, through a literature review by gathering data from different sources, mainly from the official publications, reports, and websites of the respective countries, this chapter features strategies undertaken towards achieving a green economy, outlines the exclusive role of the Green Sukuk and how well it has been progressing thus far. Through a comparative study of Indonesia and UAE’s the initial development, law and regulations, and issuance of Green Sukuk, this review updates readers on their journey towards a sustainable future.
