'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Gaussian Approximation and Multiplier Bootstrap for Polyak-Ruppert Averaged Linear Stochastic Approximation with Applications to TD Learning

P. 12408–12460.
Samsonov S., Moulines E., Shao Q., Zhang Z., Naumov A.

In this paper, we obtain the Berry–Esseen bound for multivariate normal approximation for the Polyak-Ruppert averaged iterates of the linear stochastic approximation (LSA) algorithm with decreasing step size. Our findings reveal that the fastest rate of normal approximation is achieved when setting the most aggressive step size αk ≍ k −1/2 . Moreover, we prove the non-asymptotic validity of the confidence intervals for parameter estimation with LSA based on multiplier bootstrap. This procedure updates the LSA estimate together with a set of randomly perturbed LSA estimates upon the arrival of subsequent observations. We illustrate our findings in the setting of temporal difference learning with linear function approximation.

In this paper, we establish the non-asymptotic validity of the multiplier bootstrap procedure for constructing the confidence sets using the Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) algorithm. Under appropriate regularity conditions, our approach avoids the need to approximate the limiting covariance of PolyakRuppert SGD iterates, which allows us to derive approximation rates in convex distance of order ...

On the rate of Gaussian approximation for online linear regression problems
Sheshukova M., Durmus A., Khusainov M. et al., Statistics 2026 P. 1–25
In this paper, we consider the problem of Gaussian approximation for the online linear regression task. We derive the corresponding rates for the setting of a constant stepsize and study the explicit dependence of the convergence rate on the problem dimension d and quantities related to the design matrix. When the number of iterations n is known in advance, ...

In this paper, we establish Berry-Esseen-type bounds for federated linear stochastic approximation (LSA). Our results provide the first federated {Gaussian} approximations for LSA that explicitly capture communication-computation trade-offs and heterogeneity-aware error terms, quantifying the effects of local step size, number of local updates, and heterogeneity on convergence rates. We present results for both (i) constant ...

In this paper, we establish non-asymptotic bounds for accuracy of normal approximation for linear two-timescale stochastic approximation (TTSA) algorithms driven by martingale difference or Markov noise. Focusing on both the last iterate and Polyak–Ruppert averaging regimes, we derive bounds for normal approximation in terms of the convex distance between probability distributions. Our analysis reveals a ...

Local Limit Theorems and Strong Approximations for Robbins-Monro Procedures
Konakov V., Mammen E., Huang L., Statistics 2026 Vol. 60 No. 2 P. 449–485
The Robbins-Monro algorithm is a recursive, simulation-based stochastic procedure to approximate the zeros of a function that can be written as an expectation. It is known that under some technical assumptions, Gaussian limit theorems approximate the stochastic performance of the algorithm. Here, we are interested in strong approximations for Robbins-Monro procedures. The main tool for ...

Stochastic approximation versus sample average approximation for Wasserstein barycenters
Dvinskikh D., Optimization Methods and Software 2022 Vol. 37 No. 5 P. 1603–1635
In the machine learning and optimization community, there are two main approaches for the convex risk minimization problem, namely the Stochastic Approximation (SA) and the Sample Average Approximation (SAA). In terms of the oracle complexity (required number of stochastic gradient evaluations), both approaches are considered equivalent on average (up to a logarithmic factor). The total complexity depends on ...

Fast incremental expectation maximization for finite-sum optimization: nonasymptotic convergence
Fort G., Gach P., Moulines E., Statistics and Computing 2021 Article 48
Fast incremental expectation maximization (FIEM) is a version of the EM framework for large datasets. In this paper, we first recast FIEM and other incremental EM type algorithms in the Stochastic Approximation within EM framework. Then, we provide nonasymptotic bounds for the convergence in expectation as a function of the number of examples n and ...

On stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics with dependent data streams in the logconcave case
Barkhagen M., Chau N. H., Moulines E. et al., Bernoulli: a journal of mathematical statistics and probability 2021 Vol. 27 No. 1 P. 1–33
We study the problem of sampling from a probability distribution ππ on RdRd which has a density w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure known up to a normalization factor x↦e−U(x)/∫Rde−U(y)dyx↦e−U(x)/∫Rde−U(y)dy. We analyze a sampling method based on the Euler discretization of the Langevin stochastic differential equations under the assumptions that the potential UU is continuously differentiable, ∇U∇U is Lipschitz, and UU is strongly concave. We focus on the ...
