Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer
Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.

HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

Visual Representation of Fuzzy Categories based on Extended Geometric Objects

P. 49–59.
Degtyarev K. Y.

A need to describe and represent categories arises in many practical situations that require collaboration between experts expressing different views. Category can be seen as a "mental representation of a class of instances" that is encoded and used afterwards as a product of decoding, synthesizing and descriptive generalized transformations in practice. To obtain the ultimate representation form, rather laborious multi-stage activity has to be carried out, and each expert has to utilize all available domain-specific information at his (her) disposal. Most of expressive forms provide not only a convenient tool for easy and confident personal perception, a medium of sharing available qualitative and quantitative data that is imprecise (fuzzy) by nature, but also a  means of presenting clear knowledge frames, individual assumptions and facts, which may not be converted straight away to some formal language constructs. As a matter of fact, we consider one particular aspect of   categories representation, to which one can arrive through interpretation, verbalization and certain forms of visualization of abstract mental images ('snapshots') and broad notions, i.e. concepts. The complexity of direct explanation of categorization process is related not only to mechanism of categories storage per se, but also to acknowledgement of fuzzy nature of such categories. In the paper, we’ll deliberately narrow down the topic touching upon just one important aspect of categories (classes) usage, which is associated with handy graphical representation that allows to consider their inherent fuzziness.

Conceptual knowledge of emotions includes somatosensory component: Evidence from modality-switch cost effect
Dagaev N., Terushkina Y., Journal of Cognitive Psychology 2014 Vol. 26 No. 3 P. 322–332
According to embodied framework, conceptual knowledge of emotions is based on the same mechanisms of simulation that are used by any other concepts. Despite some evidence concerning the somatosensory component of such knowledge, most of the data deal with the motor component. In two experiments (original and replication), we examined the involvement of somatosensory modality ...

Prototype-based Categorization of Structural Complexity Estimates of Simplicial Complexes
Degtyarev K. Y., , in: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Application of Fuzzy Systems and Soft Computing (ICAFS-2012).: Kaufering: b-Quadrat Verlag, 2012. P. 27–37.
The material of the present paper is grounded on the holist algebraic method (Q-analysis) proposed by English mathematician and physicist R.H.Atkin. At its core, the approach is aimed at both analysis of systems structures (in the form of simplicial complexes K, which is formed by a set of properly adjoined objects called simplexes) and calculation ...
