The Russian Orthodox Church and the Deep Constitution of Russia
Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion. 2024. Vol. 15. P. 193–210.
Russian law formally assigns quite a modest role to the Russian Orthodox Church (the roc or the Church). The Orthodoxy is mentioned in the 1997 Law on Freedom of Conscience and of Religious Organizations as one of the traditional religions of Russia, the law also recognizes its historical importance for the development of Russian spiritual culture. These few mentions seemingly do not have much legal weight and, evermore, are formally neutralized by the superior constitutional principles of separation and secularity, by the constitutional requirement of equal treatment of all religions.
