‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

‘I Like Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
Andrey Vorchik studies happiness, delivers popular science lectures, and believes that science should address social issues as well. In an interview for the Young Scientists of HSE University project, he spoke about how emotions influence decision-making, the Bermuda Triangle formed by the bathroom, refrigerator, and bed, and the ideal formula for education.

Characterizing Graph Datasets for Node Classification: Homophily-Heterophily Dichotomy and Beyond
Oleg Platonov, Denis Kuznedelev, Babenko A. et al., , in: Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems 36 (NeurIPS 2023).: Curran Associates, Inc., 2023.
Homophily is a graph property describing the tendency of edges to connect similar nodes; the opposite is called heterophily. Much effort has been put into developing efficient methods for learning on heterophilous graphs. However, there is no universally agreed-upon measure of homophily in the literature. In this work, we show that commonly used homophily measures ...

Is Network Structure Important for Protest Mobilization? Findings from Agent-Based Modeling
Petrov A. P., Akhremenko A.S., Zheglov S.A. et al., Monitoring Obshchestvennogo Mneniya: Ekonomichekie i Sotsial'nye Peremeny 2021 No. 6 P. 226–253
In  recent  decades,  the  fo-cus of civic engagement research has shifted towards studying social environments’ effects on individuals’ decisions on whether to participate in a given activity or not. Online communication has been increasingly influencing the scale of  social  environments  as  well  as  the  features of both online and offline inter-personal communications. Surely, then, individuals’ ...

Схожесть или близость? Структура социальных связей школьников в масштабе области
Dokuka S., Smirnov I., Dementeva J., Городские исследования и практики 2020 Т. 4 № 1 С. 88–104
There are two factors that are generally considered key in the formation of social networks. One is homophily or the tendency of similar individuals to connect with each and the other is geographical proximity. The roles of homophily and proximity, however, are rarely compared. This means that there are no good estimates of the relative ...

Health, Grades and Friendship: How Socially Constructed Characteristics Influence the Social Network Structure
Dokuka S., Krekhovets E., Priymak M., , in: Analysis of Images, Social Networks and Texts. 6th International Conference, 2017, Revised Selected PapersVol. 10716.: Cham: Springer, 2018. P. 381–391.
Homophily - tendency for people to form social connections with similar others - is one of the key topics in social network analysis. It indicates to what extent people tend to be similar to their friends and in what dimensions. For the long time homophily was just an index of the social similarity, but for ...

Formation of homophily in academic performance: Students change their friends rather than performance
Smirnov I., Thurner S., Plos One 2017 Vol. 12 No. 8 P. 1–16
Homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate with others who share similar traits, has been identified as a major driving force in the formation and evolution of social ties. In many cases, it is not clear if homophily is the result of a socialization process, where individuals change their traits according to the dominance of ...

Dokuka S., Valeeva D., Yudkevich M. M., , in: Analysis of Images, Social Networks and Texts. 5th International Conference, AIST 2016, Yekaterinburg, Russia, April 7-9, 2016, Revised Selected Papers. Communications in Computer and Information ScienceVol. 661.: Switzerland: Springer, 2017. P. 91–99.
Homophily is considered by network scientists as one of the major mechanisms of social network formation. However, the role of dynamic homophily in the network growth process has not been investigated in detail yet. In this paper, we estimate the role of homophily by various attributes at different stages of online network formation process. We ...

Marketing via Friends: Strategic Diffusion of Information in Social Networks with Homophily
Chuhay R., / Series 1 "Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Research Paper Series". 2010.
The paper studies the impact of homophily on the optimal strategies of a monopolist, whose marketing campaign of new product relies on a word of mouth communication. Homophily is a tendency of people to interact more with those who are similar to them. In the model there are two types of consumers embedded into a ...
