Personal Interest in Doctoral Thesis Topic Most Important for Confidence in Successful Defence
A researcher at HSE University analysed data on 1,539 doctoral students from 161 Russian universities to identify which features of a thesis topic are associated with academic success and engagement. The most important factor was found to be personal interest in the research topic, which was associated with almost all key aspects of doctoral programme experience—from engaging with the academic supervisor to research activity and confidence about successfully defending the thesis. The findings have been published in Higher Education.

Благополучие школьников в теории самодетерминации: обзор теоретических и эмпирических публикаций

Гл. 1. С. 11–42.
Strukova A.
Editor of translation: Kanonire T.

Self-determination theory offers an interesting perspective on the well-being of students. According to it, the satisfaction of three universal needs - autonomy , competence and relatedness is a condition for the well-being of the individual. A number of publications based on this theory concerns students’ well-being at school. The purpose of this work is to conduct a systematic review of such publications. For the review, publications based on the theory of determination related to the field of education will be used.

Research questions:

  • What are the theoretical foundations of well-being in the theory of self-determination?

  • What is the scope of studies of school well-being based on the theory of self-determination?

  • What well-being interventions does self-determination theory suggest?

  • To what extent do they find support for effectiveness in evidence-based studies?

The publication will be useful to researchers in the field of education - as it will offer an overview of existing research and gaps for future inquiries - and to practitioners, as it will present the ways to improve well-being, based on the SDT and empirical evidence of their effectiveness.
