In the article, on the basis of a theoretical analysis of the evolution of the system of socio-economic relations in the historical context, scientific approaches to the category "household" were investigated. Despite the fact that household category is one of the basic and historically one of the first categories of economic science, the economic theory has lacks of methodological basis for studying this complex phenomenon. The significant differences in the interpretation by researchers of the content of the household category are due to both objective socio-economic and historical conditions and the institutional pressure of the dominant views. These discrepancies impose limitations on the understanding of systemic relationships of the category and the possibility of its application in modern theoretical studies.
The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of economic conditions on the understanding of the household as a key economic entity. The article shows the influence of economic and social factors on the understanding of the essence of the category "household".
In the research, analytical-gnoseological, system-integration, dialectical methods were used.
The article discusses the interpretation of the Marxian legacy proposed by I.I. Rubin. This interpretation provided an answer to the challenges faced by Marxism at the turn of the twentieth century. From the 1970s it becomes widely known abroad. Despite the tragic fate of the scholar, his works had made a significant impact on economic studies in the Soviet Union. However, their perception was greatly complicated due to the effect of social and political factors related to the functioning of the Soviet political economy.
The “Economic Methodology” section under the moderation of HSE Professor Vladimir Avtonomov took place on the 20th and 21st of April within the XVII April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development. The section consisted of five sessions: “Economics: Beginning and Continuation”; “Soviet Theorists and Historians of Thought”; “Property, Inequality, Paternalism”; “Methodological Problems of Economic Science”; and “In Search of a Realistic Economics.” Each session had three reports which were followed with discussion among the participants. The question of theoretical and methodological nature of economics and history of economic thought as well as the problem of the practical application of theoretical knowledge were in the spotlight. This paper focuses on a philosophical and methodological reflection of economics and the history of economic thought, and it partly stresses the problems and practical application of economic knowledge; therefore, not all reports are discussed. Economics is an unrealized natural science project in which primordial foundation has a moral character and is associated with philosophical notions about economy life organization. Scholars’ comprehension of economics, its methodology, and models of economic human has changed over the years. Economists, historians, and methodologists of economic thought reference the philosophical theories and concepts, which allow them to look critically at what is happening inside the disciplinary area, resolve old problems, and ask new questions.
