An endowment is generally considered an important instrument ensuring institutional sustainability of a nonprofit organization. An endowment facilitates the pursuit of nonprofit missions in the long term, supports the achivement of goals and tasks set in the charter of the nonprofit organization which has an endowment. In Russia significant hopes for the future development of the nonprofit sector in general are linked to the recently adopted law on nonprofit endowment. US experience in the area of managing nonprofit endowments and an assessment of the consequences of the financial and economic crisis for the resources invested in the market with the aim to support  nonprofits is of interest within the Russian context.
