'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

The effect of interstimulus intervals on the outputs of nTMS motor mapping

P. 126–126.
Сукманова А. А., Makarova M., Asmolova A., Nazarova M., Nikulin V.

Magnetic resonance imaging navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) is a method of non-invasive brain stimulation that allows precise cortical motor mapping. One of the parameters that can affect the results of nTMS stimulation is the interval between the two consecutive stimuli (the inter-stimulus interval, ISI). However, in nTMS mapping studies, researchers quite rarely report the ISIs values. The study aimed to test the influence of ISIs on the output of nTMS motor mapping.

We analysed data from the ongoing nTMS study, during which the motor cortex was mapped before and after finger dexterity training. The study involved 26 healthy right-handed male volunteers (18-35 y.o., M(SD) = 23.32(4.30)). Two nТMS mapping sessions were separated by two weeks. Each session included two sub-sessions in which the same cortical targets were stimulated. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were obtained from upper limb muscles: three hand muscles and three forearm muscles. Since the nTMS mapping was performed by a human operator, the ISIs were calculated offline after the mapping.

Statistical analysis was performed using linear regression models in R. We found no significant interaction between the ISIs values and the amplitudes of MEPs recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle, nor between the ISIs and the motor cortical representations (MCRs) of all the studied muscles. However, analysis of the individual sub-sessions showed a positive relationship between the ISIs and the MCRs areas of the two hand muscles during the first sub-session (t = 2.32, p<.05; t = 2.08, p<.05) and five muscles in the fourth sub-session (intrinsic hand muscles: t = 2.3, p<.05; t = 3.41, p<.01; forearm muscles: t = 3.34, p<.01; t = 2.87, p<.01; t = 2.3, p<.05). There was also a significant relationship between the number of stimuli per session and the median ISIs for the fourth sub-session (t = 3.39, p<.01).

According to these results, ISIs did not significantly affect the amplitude of the MEPs. The interrelation between the ISIs and MCRs areas during the fourth sub-session was caused by the positive correlation of the ISIs and the number of stimuli. We suggest TMS researchers additionally control differences in the procedures of repeated sessions because the resulting significant differences between sessions may be related to technical mapping parameters. Although ISIs do not directly affect MCRs areas and MEPs, they can be a marker for differences in mapping procedures across sessions.

Motor imagery perspective shapes corticospinal excitability with effector-specific effects
Perevoznyuk G., Batov A., Pleskovskaya A. et al., Scientific Reports 2026 Vol. 16 Article 13098
Motor imagery (MI) allows individuals to mentally simulate movements without execution, engaging neural pathways that overlap with those used during real actions. However, how imagery perspective influences corticospinal excitability across different effectors remains unclear. Using neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we compared kinesthetic (KMI), first-person visual (VMI-1PP), and third-person visual (VMI-3PP) imagery of elbow flexion-extension ...

Hardware powered ultra-low latency (HarPULL) brain-body state dependent TMS technology for investigation of the motor system
Makarova M., Некрасова Ю. Ю., Fedosov N. et al., Brain Stimulation 2025 Vol. 18 No. 1 P. 495
Сortico-spinal neuron excitability can be tracked using rhythmic oscillations whose phase plays a pivotal role in assessing the state of the pertinent neural network. Brain’s oscillatory activity can be non-invasively registered with electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) contingent upon the parameters of the ongoing brain activity was shown to have numerous applications in both research and clinics. Despite the potential, the described closed-loop ...

On the Relation Between the Interstimulus Intervals and Multi-Muscle nTMS Motor Mapping
Anastasiia Asmolova, Anastasiia Sukmanova, Makarova M. et al., Brain Topography 2025 Vol. 38 Article 55
Although the interstimulus interval (ISI) is one of the crucial parameters in the transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), the ISI effect on the results of the TMS motor mapping is usually overlooked. This study explored the influence of ISI, ranging from 1.5 to 41 s, on multi-muscle navigated TMS (nTMS) motor mapping results. Twenty-six healthy male volunteers ...

A BCI-Based Vibrotactile Neurofeedback Training Improves Motor Cortical Excitability During Motor Imagery
Grigorev N., Savosenkov A., Lukoyanov M. et al., IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering 2021 Vol. 29 P. 1583–1592
In this study, we address the issue of whether vibrotactile feedback can enhance the motor cortex excitability translated into the plastic changes in local cortical areas during motor imagery (MI) BCI-based training. For this purpose, we focused on two of the most notable neurophysiological effects of MI – the event-related desynchronization (ERD) level and the ...

Forearm and hand muscles exhibit high coactivation and overlapping of cortical motor representations
Tardelli G., Souza V. H., Matsuda R. et al., bioRxiv 2021
Most of the motor mapping procedures using navigated transcranial magnetic stimualiton (nTMS) follows the conventional somatotopic organization of the primary motor cortex (M1) by assessesing the representation of a particular target muscle, disregarding the possible coactivation of synergistic muscles. In turn, multiple reports describe a functional organization of the M1 with an overlapping among motor ...

MNI NORMALIZATION OF TMS MOTOR MAPS: PROBING WITHIN-LIMB SOMATOTOPY OF THE PRIMARY HAND MOTOR CORTEX

A within-limb somatotopy of the motor cortex remains a highly debated research topic. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a promising approach of non-invasive motor cortex mapping which is suitable for studying this topic in humans. One of the problems for interpreting TMS mapping results is that MNI normalization, which is routinely used for other brain ...
