Equivalent Capacitance of a Sheet Electron Beam

We consider the possibility to replace an electron beam (EB) by a "hot" equivalent capacitance that will make it possible to use "hot" equivalent circuits and long lines for analysis the EB interaction in TWTs. A sheet EB in the field of the in-phase mode of the slow wave excited by coupled impedance electrodes is considered in this paper.

The model based on coupled impedance electrodes was used to analyze effectiveness of a sheet e-beam interaction with the in-phase mode of a slow wave. The coupling coefficient, characterizing the interaction effectiveness, was calculated using derivatives of the equivalent parameters, the specific capacitances and inductance. The calculated coefficient was compared with that of a cylindrical e-beam in a helix.

A Plane TWT Model on One Impedance Electrode

The plane TWT model on one impedance electrode is offered and analyzed in this paper. The "hot" dispersion equation for the adjacent to the impedance electrode a homogeneous sheet electron beam is found. Formulas for coefficients of the TWT characteristic equation, coupling and depression coefficients, are derived by differentiating the dispersion equation.

The electrodynamic characteristics of the helical slow-wave structure of a high-power pulse traveling-wave tube operating in the centimeter wavelength range are calculated by means of the solution of the dispersion equation and simulation. Special attention is focused on the effect of a helix wire profile on the electrodynamic characteristics of the system. The results of the theoretical study are compared with the experimental data.

A numerical simulator of the interaction processes in helical traveling-wave tubes is developed on the basis of the method of large particles in the 1D approximation with the use of the calculation methods developed previously. The output characteristics (frequency dependences of the output power and gain factor) of high-power traveling wave tubes based on helical slow-wave structures for operation in the C and Ku wave bands are studied theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the results of numerical simulation are in satisfactory agreement with experimental data.

The TWT model based on placed in parallel impedance electrodes is used to analyze effectiveness of a sheet e-beam interaction with the in-phase mode of a slow wave excited in the impedance electrodes. The impedance approximation was used for presentation fields of E- and H-waves by zero and ±1 space harmonics, respectively. The generalized formula for the coupling coefficient, characterizing the interaction effectiveness, was used to demonstrate the its dependence on the e-beam thickness and the gaps between the impedance and screen electrodes. The obtained dependences on the e-beam tunnel geometry and the operating frequency were compared with that calculated for a cylindrical beam in a conventional helix.
