'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Pechenkova E., Rachinskaya M., Vasilenko V. et al.,
Modern psychological accounts of mental imagery distinguish two aspects of visual mental representation: object (representation of pictorial features, such as shape, color, and texture) and spatial (representation of spatial relations and transformations). The hypothetical neural substrates of object and spatial imagery are the ventral and dorsal visual pathways in the brain. To study spatial imagination, ...

Object imagery, representing pictorial features, and spatial imagery, representing spatial relations and transformations, are two aspects of visual mental imagery distinguished in the literature. While spatial imagery is assessed primarily with performance tests that allow an objective assessment of mental images, object imagery is assessed mainly on the basis of subjective self-report on imagery vividness. ...

Vision for Perception and Vision for Action in Space Travelers
Karpinskaia V., Pechenkova E., Zelenskaya I. et al., Frontiers in Physiology 2022 Vol. 13 Article 806578
Microgravity challenges the human body and brain in many different ways. One of the most evident challenges is the altered functioning of sensory systems, including absent support afference, degraded proprioceptive feedback and unreliable vestibular input. The result is a conflict between the input from different channels, which is resolved through sensory realignment and reweighting (Horak ...

The Two Eyes of the Blind Mind: Object vs. Spatial Aphantasia?
Blazhenkova O., Pechenkova E., The Russian Journal of Cognitive Science 2019 Vol. 6 No. 4 P. 50–64
Individual variability in imagery experiences has long attracted the interest of philosophers, educators, and psychologists. Since Aristotle’s time, it was assumed that imagery is a universal ability, so everyone possesses it. Galton first measured the vividness of subjective imagery experiences, and discovered that some individuals reported zero imagination. Recent research has coined the term “aphantasia” — ...
