HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Fluxon cotunneling in coupled Josephson junctions: Perturbation theory
Semenov A. G., Latyshev A., Andrei D. Zaikin, Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2025 Vol. 112 No. 14 Article 144501
We investigate the effects of fluxon cotunneling and quantum Coulomb drag in a system of two small Josephson junctions coupled by means of mutual capacitanceCm. Depending on the value ofCm we identify three different regimes of strong, intermediate, and weak coupling. Focusing our attention on the last two regimes we develop a perturbation theory in the interaction and ...

Current-Phase Relation for Transparent Superconducting Junctions
Galaktionov A. V., Zaikin A., Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism 2025 Vol. 38 Article 74
We present a detailed numerical analysis of a non-equilibrium current-phase relation for transparent Josephson junctions in the voltage-biased regime. In the limit of subgap voltages and temperatures, we demonstrate an important role of phase-periodic dissipative effects which significantly modify the current-phase relation for such superconducting weak links. ...

Absence of fractional ac Josephson effect in superconducting junctions
Kalenkov M., Andrei D. Zaikin, Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2024 Vol. 110 No. 13 Article 134521
We develop a microscopic theory of ac Josephson effect in superconducting junctions described by an arbitrary scattering matrix that may include magnetic effects. In the limit of constant in time bias voltage V applied to the junction we derive a formally exact current-phase relation (CPR) that is manifestly 2π periodic in the Josephson phase ϕ in full accordance ...

Josephson bifurcation readout: beyond the monochromatic approximation
Yu. Makhlin, Zorin A. B., Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics 2024 Vol. 166 No. 1(7) P. 98–109
We analyze properties of bifurcation quantum detectors based on weakly nonlinear superconducting resonance circuits, in particular, with application to quantum readout. The developed quantitative description demonstrates strong influence of higher harmonics on their characteristics. While this effect is relevant for various circuits, including the conventional Josephson bifurcation amplifier and the parametrically driven circuit, we first ...

Josephson dynamics and Shapiro steps at high transmissions: current bias regime
Galaktionov A. V., Zaikin A., Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology 2024 Vol. 15 P. 51–56
We investigate Josephson dynamics of highly transparent superconducting nanojunctions at subgap voltages and temperatures. In this limit, intrinsic dissipation in such junctions turns out to be sub-Ohmic, which yields a linear dependence of the average voltage on the bias current I slightly exceeding the critical one Ic. We demonstrate a strong impact of intrinsic sub-Ohmic ...

Josephson dynamics at high transmissions: Perturbation theory
Galaktionov A., Andrei D. Zaikin, Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 21 Article 214507
We theoretically analyze Josephson dynamics of superconducting weak links with transmissions T not much smaller than unity at subgap bias voltages V. Employing the effective action approach cjmbined with the Keldysh technique, we develop a regular perturbation theory in R=1-T and derive the first odrder correction to the current across the weak link, which consists ...

Nonlinear focusing of terahertz laser beam using a layered superconductor
Ovcharenko H. V., Maizelis Z. A., Apostolov S. S. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2022 Vol. 106 No. 17 Article 174511
We theoretically study the propagation of a terahertz (THz) Gaussian beam through a thin sample of layered superconductor. We consider the beam axis and the superconducting layers to be perpendicular to the sample interface, while the electric field in the beam is perpendicular to the layers. We show that, in such a geometry, the Josephson ...

Anomalous Josephson Effect of s-Wave Pairing States in Chiral Double Layers
Ziegler K., Sinner A., Yurii E. Lozovik, Physical Review Letters 2022 Vol. 128 No. 12 Article 157001
We consider s-wave pairing in a double layer of two chiral metals due to interlayer Coulomb interaction and study the Josephson effect near a domain wall, where the sign of the order parameter jumps. The domain wall creates two evanescent modes at the exceptional zero-energy point, whose superposition is associated with currents flowing in different ...

Superconducting phases and the second Josephson harmonic in tunnel junctions between diffusive superconductors
Osin A. S., Fominov Ya.V., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2021 Vol. 104 No. 6 Article 064514
We consider a planar SIS-type Josephson junction between diffusive superconductors (S) through an insulating tunnel interface (I). We construct fully self-consistent perturbation theory with respect to the interface conductance. As a result, we find correction to the first Josephson harmonic and calculate the second Josephson harmonic. At arbitrary temperatures, we correct previous results for the ...

Fraunhofer oscillations of the critical current at a varying Zeeman field in a spin-orbit coupled Josephson junction
Mal'shukov A., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2020 Vol. 102 P. 134509-1–134509-5
The Zeeman interaction results in spontaneous current through a Josephson contact with a spin-orbit coupled normal metal, even in the absence of any voltage, or phase bias. In the case of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling of electrons in a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas this effect takes place for the Zeeman field which is parallel to the 2D system ...
