Team Success: Aligning Means with Objectives
In corporations, sports, and academia, people often face challenges they cannot handle alone. In such cases, selecting the right team is crucial. Tatiana Mayskaya, Associate Professor at the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences and the International College of Economics and Finance, together with colleagues from foreign universities, examined team characteristics and found that less diverse teams are better suited to objectives where a high average performance is important, whereas more diverse teams are preferable when avoiding failure is critical. The paper has been published in Economic Theory.

Economists Propose More Effective Approach to Reducing Smoking
Economists at HSE University have examined how smokers respond to changes in cigarette prices. When tobacco prices increase, cigarette consumption does not always decline. In fact, spending on tobacco may even rise: according to the researchers, a 1% decrease in cigarette affordability leads to a 0.28% increase in per capita tobacco expenditure. The findings suggest that to reduce smoking rates, tobacco prices must rise faster than household incomes. The study has been published in Voprosy Statistiki.

In the middle of the last century, it was demonstrated that with a decrease in the size of superconducting structures, for example, the thickness of a thin film, its critical temperature Tc shifts by a certain amount. It increases in aluminum, tin, and indium, and decreases in mercury, niobium and lead. However, there is still no generally accepted ...

The enhancement of the critical temperature in thin aluminium films
Sedov E., Golokolenov I., Konstantinidis G. et al., , in: Cryogenics 2019. Proceedings of the 15th IIR International Conference: Prague, Czech Republic, April 8-11, 2019Vol. 15.: P.: IIF-IIR, 2019. P. 363–368.
It is well known that new effects appear in superconductors with the reduction of their size. Among them one is the most interesting – phenomenon of changing of critical temperature. It can be both decrease and increase in different metals, however, despite the number of existing works, there is still no generally accepted conception of ...

Quantum size effect in single-crystalline bismuth nanorods
Arutyunov K., Sedov E. A., Riikonen K., Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2017 Vol. 929 P. 1–5
In a metal sample, where at least one of the dimensions is comparable with the de Broglie wavelength of conduction electrons, the quantum size effects (QSE) should be observed. QSEs manifest themselves as non-monotonic dependencies of various material properties as function of relevant dimension. QSE should be particularly noticeable in materials with charge carrier(s) effective ...

Quantum size phenomena in bismuth nanostructures
Arutyunov K., Sedov E. A., Riikonen K., , in: MIPT Conference & International School “Superconducting hybrid nanostructures: physics and application” September 19-26, 2016.: Dolgoprudni: [б.и.], 2016. P. 1–1.
Size-dependent quantization of energy spectrum of conducting electrons in solids leads to oscillating dependence of electronic properties on corresponding dimension(s) [1]. In conventional metals with typical energy Fermi EF~1 eV and the charge carrier's effective masses m* of the order of free electron mass m0, the quantum size phenomena provide noticeable impact only at nanometer scales. Here we experimentally demonstrate ...

Quantum size phenomena develop when the dimension(s) of a system approach certain characteristic scales. Modern nanotechnology enables routine and reproducible fabrication of nanostructures with sub-100 nm features where such effects might be pronounced. In this research we used lift-off lithography and vacuum metal deposition to fabricate bismuth (semimetal) and titanium (superconductor) nanowires. Then low energy argon ion beam ...
