Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

The paper is based on my fieldwork in 2019–2023 through participant observation, interviewing and online ethnography. The process of moral building begins at the moment of conversion and ...

От римских епископов к римским папам (I - середина VIII в.)
Потехина И. П., СПб.: Евразия, 2024.
The history of the papacy - a specific power institution that for a long time controlled not only huge masses of believers but also a significant part of the political, economic, social and cultural processes within the Western Catholic world - has occupied the minds of researchers and readers for centuries. The period of late Antiquity and ...

Masagutova M., Антропологический форум 2022 № 55 С. 355–371
Tanya Luhrmann’s new book is a great example of an academic text turning into a bestseller. The book, based on many years of fieldwork, addresses the issue of faith. The author argues that faith is not given and predefined, and instead should be seen as a long and complicated process of “real-making”—the individual’s effort to ...

Masagutova M., Этнография 2021 № 4(14) С. 138–157
The coronavirus pandemic proved to be a challenge for anthropologists as well for those they study. The classical anthropological method of participant observation under quarantine restrictions turned out to be nearly impossible, which has jeopardized many researchers’ fieldwork. At the same time, due to sanitary and epidemiological restrictions, the regular spiritual life of the Churikovtsy ...

Mediated Easter: Constructing Religious Rituals In A Lockdown
Daria Radchenko, Folklore (Estonia) 2022 Vol. 87 P. 105–124
The COVID-19 pandemic led to major lockdowns over the world in 2020. This situation severely limited the possibility of several social activities, including religious gatherings. In Russia, the peak of the pandemic coincided with the central period in the Orthodox calendar – the last week of Lent and Easter. As the Patriarch blessed stay-at-home politics, churches ...

Аброськина Е. В., Антонян Ю. Ю., Баранов Д. А. et al., Антропологический форум 2022 № 55 С. 31–152
Material in the broad sense of the word, including body, things, space of mosque, holy places (Arabic. mazar, ziyarat) and other tangible objects are an important component of Muslim religiosity. This is evidenced by the specific attitudes of the Sharia and Muslim custom in the Caucasus. The controversy about the corporeal in Islam sheds light ...

This article analyzes an almost unprecedented religious situation, which emerged after the 1905 “Edict of Toleration.” The Edict set in motion a number of processes in Russian religious landscape and created a legal foundation of what may be called a situation of multi-Orthodoxy. The author explores the legal co-existence of two church hierarchies who called ...

This text is, above all, a grateful testament to a local saint’s continued liveliness. It is a new hagiography, a story of a woman who gave away everything—her house, her money, her possessions, and even her name—who wandered homeless, and who has helped people resolve desperate situations ever since. Retelling the fragmented stories of how ...
