Middle-Class Russians Reduce Spending When It Comes to Themselves but Not Their Children
Middle-class Russians are more likely to reduce spending on the development of their own human capital and prioritize investing in their children instead, particularly when it comes to their children’s education. This is evidenced by a study conducted by the Centre for Studies of Income and Living Standards of HSE University.

How Lockdown Has Changed Life for Russian Women
Researchers Yulia Chilipenok, Olga Gaponova, Nadezhda Gaponova and Lyubov Danilova of HSE – Nizhny Novgorod looked at how the lockdown has impacted Russian women during the COVID-19 pandemic. They studied the following questions: how women divided their time; how they worked from home; how they got on with their partners and children; and how they dropped old habits and started new ones in relation to nutrition, health, beauty, and self-development.

Catastrophe and Opportunity: HSE University Experts Learn the Lessons of Crises of the Last Hundred Years
The idea for the project, which studies the crisis experience, was born at HSE University’s Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs last spring, when it became clear that the pandemic and lockdown had given rise to a new systemic crisis, based on numerous contradictions that have accumulated in the world over the past decades. The results of the scientific Lessons from the Crises of the Past project have been presented to the portal's news service by Igor Makarov, Head of HSE University’s School of World Economy.

At this article we describe the benefits from integration not just within one supply chain, but within a net of different supply chains around the world. Today, there is no single methodological approach to integration with companies from different supply chains. However, with thoughtful approach to information management all potential risks from integration with vendors from other supply chains can be minimized, and at the same time benefits from integration with vendors from other supply chains can improve the efficiency of each integrated company, improving its competitive advantage. We will show which major issues the integration on global level can solve, from which modules the integration system should consist and which principles it should follow.

Endogenous Property Rights, Conflict Intensity and Inequality in Asymmetric Rent-seeking Contest

Does less inequality in wealth distribution imply better property rights protection? In this paper we show that this impact is non monotonous and is conditional on a) equilibrium type: conflict (rent-seeking) or peace, b) the reasons of changes in wealth distribution, and c) the size of the ruling class, “elite”. In the conflict stage, institutional quality positively depends on the wealth of the elite, but negatively – on the size of the elite class. However, the transition from conflict to peace stage (with no rent-seeking and fast growth) requires the reduction of inequality. This generates an institutional trap. Moreover, the intensity of rent-seeking behavior increases both with progressive redistribution of wealth and with widening of the ruling class. Our results allow characterizing wealth distributions, wherein it is better to redistribute wealth or to expand the ruling class in order to improve institutions and limit rent-seeking incentives.
