The article deals with the problem of functional fixedness as one of the factors inhibiting productive thinking of a person. A brief overview of ideas about the nature of this phenomenon, as well as the existing ways to deal with it has been done. The article presents results of an original study on particular ways how to re- duce the effect of functional fixedness. In Experiments 1 and 2, a positive effect of updating images of objects with less pronounced functional properties compared to target object, was found. In Experiment 3, a similar effect caused by the tendency to avoid focusing on functional property was revealed.
