HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Concrete images, diverse ideas: The role of pictures in learning from multimedia texts of varying abstractness
Blinova E., Olga Shcherbakova, Learning and Instruction 2026 Vol. 106 Article 102432
Abstract Background Knowledge abstractness is one of the factors affecting learning outcomes, particularly in learning from multimedia texts. However, most previous studies on multimedia learning have focused on manipulating pictorial abstractness, while the role of text topic abstractness remains largely unexplored. Aims 1. Examine how topic abstractness influences multimedia learning outcomes when pictorial abstractness remains constant. 2. Investigate how ...

Mechanisms underlying disfluency effects: a systematic review
Tsigeman-Gorenko E., Психологические исследования: электронный научный журнал 2026 Vol. 19 No. 108 P. 3–22
Introduction. Although some studies link disfluency – the subjective experience of difficulty in processing information – to cognitive and metacognitive benefits, empirical findings remain inconsistent, often showing null or negative effects, while theoretical explanations remain fragmented. Objective. The aim of this review was to systematize and clarify the mechanisms through which disfluency influences cognitive, metacognitive, ...

Предикторы понимания при чтении: когнитивные характеристики реципиента и имплицитные смыслы текста
Обольская В. А., Sherbakova O., Психологический журнал 2026 Т. 47 № 1 С. 57–68
Our study aimed to identify predictors of reading comprehension, motivated by the growing body of evidence regarding difficulties in semantic reading among healthy adults. We hypothesized that (1) predictors of the text comprehension include both cognitive characteristics of readers — specifically psychometric intelligence (IQ), Theory of Mind (ToM), and “equivalence range” and “field dependence-independence” cognitive ...

Provlotskaya I., Minnigulova A., Gordeyeva E. et al., Brain Structure and Function 2026 Vol. 231 Article 113
The Wada test is an invasive procedure used to assess language and memory lateralization. Цифровизация памяти: эффект Google и запоминание информации
Худова В. А., Glebko N., Новые психологические исследования 2026 № 2 С. 13–37
Digitalization and the widespread use of the Internet have changed the way people interact with information. The Internet and digital devices are becoming a kind of “external memory storage,” functioning as a form of transactive memory: instead of relying on their own cognitive resources, people increasingly trust search engines and cloud services. In this regard, ...

Switching between fluent and disfluent fonts improves young learners’ estimation of memory effectiveness but not memory itself
Elina Tsigeman, Likhanov M., Elena Gorbunova et al., Educational Psychology 2026 Vol. 46 No. 7 P. 973–992
Research suggests hard-to-read fonts may improve information retention in adults, but this has rarely been tested in children. This experiment investigated the effect of font disfluency (fluent, disfluent, or mixed) on text retention and metacognitive judgments in 202 young learners (Mage = 10.13 years). Participants read a text, completed immediate and delayed recall tests, and provided ...
