Vietic ethnic groups in the North Central Vietnam — Sach, May, Ruc, Malieng, Arem, and some others settled on the Vietnam-Laos border. Until the mid-20th century, they led a nomadic life, living in caves and survived by hunting and gathering. Only at the beginning of the 21st century, they moved to a sedentary lifestyle. In 1973, these groups were united under a common name — Chut ethnic minority. Languages spoken by these local groups belong to the Vietic languages. The sociolinguistic survey conducted during the fieldwork in 2012 and 2013 showed that almost all Chut people, including children, use their mother tongue in everyday life. The Chut languages are endangered languages because of assimilation processes, the small number of speakers, and the limited scope of these languages’ use.
