This study examines whether the accuracy of detecting the misuse of articles in a written text varies with the respect to the focus on the kind of errors as well as to self-reviewing or reviewing classmates’ essays. The data were collected during an experiment with four groups reviewing either their own or 89 other students’ essays. The result shows that there is a significant difference between the ratio of the errors detected by the students in their own writings and the essays of their classmates. The effectiveness of error correction also depends on the instruction given, with the highest ratio in the group who were to look for the article misuse in their own essays.
