Book chapter

Конфессиональные и «этнические» факторы в религиозном насилии времени восстания Богдана Хмельницкого (1648-1649 гг.)

С. 119-132.

Sources which mirror religious motives in violent acts of Cossacks, peasants, burghers in the years of B. Khmelnitsky’s uprising (1648-1649) have been studied. Court process of the executed Cossack in July 1648 revealed that clergymen and town settlers were actively involved in uprising, being guided by religious inspiration. All that allows to qualify B. Khmelnitsky’s uprising as a form of religious wars. On the other hand, “ethnic” and “national” motives seem to be marginal, since the notion of “Ruthenian faith” was far from being “ethnic” or “national”, as it becomes apparent by the attentive analysis of our sources.
