Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Fair Division: How Mathematics Helps to Divide the Indivisible
How can items be allocated among participants so that no one feels short-changed? Alexander Karpov, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and his Singaporean colleague, Prof. Warut Suksompong, set out to find a mathematical answer to this question. In this interview, they discuss how a model of rational preferences is constructed, why one cannot rely on a simple sum of values, and where an algorithm that asks a minimal number of questions can be useful.

Electronics of the Future: Why Superconductors and Spintronics Work Together
It was once believed that superconductivity and magnetism avoided each other like the devil avoids holy water. However, modern nanostructures prove the opposite. A Russian theoretical physicist and Indian experimentalists have joined forces to create the electronics of the future—free from energy losses. Nataliya Pugach, Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering at HSE MIEM and Leading Research Fellow at the Quantum Nanoelectronics Laboratory, explains how a long-standing acquaintance in Cambridge grew into a mirror laboratory project with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), how superconducting spintronics works, and what surprises a researcher in India beyond the university campus.

We study the stability conditions of the multiserver system in which each customer requires a random number of servers simultaneously. The input flow is supposed to be a regenerative one and a random service time is identical at all occupied servers. The service time has an exponential or a phase-type distribution. We de fine an auxiliary ...

Multiserver Queueing System with Constant Service Time and Simultaneous Service of a Customer by Random Number of servers
Grishunina S., Theory of Probability and Its Applications 2019 Vol. 64 No. 3 P. 456–460
This paper is focused on stability conditions of a multiserver queueing system with regenerative input flow where a random number of servers is simultaneously required for each customer, and each server completion time is constant. It turns out that the stability condition depends on the rate of the input flow rather than on its structure. ...

On mean-field GI/GI/1 queueing model: existence, uniqueness
Veretennikov A., Queueing Systems 2020 Vol. 94 No. 3 P. 243–255
A mean-field extension of the queueing system \(GI/GI/1\) is considered. The process is constructed as a Markov solution of a martingale problem. Uniqueness in distribution is also established under a slightly different set of assumptions on intensities in comparison to those required for existence. ...

The estimation of the capacity of the highway intersected by a crosswalk without traffic lights

The purpose of the proposed study is an estimation of the carrying capacity of the automobile road, crossed by a crosswalk. Under the capacity we mean the upper limit of the intensity of the flow of cars, when the queue of cars does not tend to infinity. This means that the stability condition for the ...

We study the Markov exclusion process for a particle system with a local interaction in the integer strip. This process models the exchange of velocities and particle-hole exchange of the liquid molecules. It is shown that the mean velocity profile corresponds to the behavior which is characteristic for incompressible viscous liquid. We prove the existence ...

On the convergence rate for queueing and reliability models described by regenerative process
Tkachenko A., Afanasyeva L. G., Journal of Mathematical Sciences 2016 Vol. 218 No. 2 P. 119–136
Convergence rates in total variation are established for some models of queueing theory and reliability theory. Analysis is based on renewal technique and asymptotic results for the renewal function. It is shown that convergence rate has an exponential asymptotics when distribution function of regeneration period satisfies Cramer's condition. Results concerning polynomial convergence are also obtained. ...

Stochastic Synchronization in a Large System of Identical Particles
A.D. Manita, Theory of Probability and Its Applications 2009 Vol. 53 No. 1 P. 155–161
We consider a basic stochastic particle system consisting of N identical particles with isotropic k-particle synchronization, ${k\ge 2}$. In the limit when both the number of particles N and the time $t=t(N)$ grow to infinity we study an asymptotic behavior of a coordinate spread of the particle system. We describe three time stages of $t(N)$ ...

Intrinsic scales for high-dimensional Levy-driven models with non-Markovian synchronizing updates
Manita A., / Series "Working papers by Cornell University". 2014. No. arXiv:1409.2919.
http://xxx.tau.ac.il/abs/1409.2919 We propose stochastic N -component synchronization models, whose dynamics is described by Levy processes and synchronizing jumps. We prove that symmetric models reach synchronization in a stochastic sense: differences between components have limits in distribution as t→∞. We give conditions of existence of natural (intrinsic) space scales for large synchronized systemsю. It appears that ...
