HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Designing an AI-Based Financial Advisor for Distressed Firms: A Decision Support Framework for Actionable and Accounting-Consistent Algorithmic Recourse
Elizaveta Lashkevich, Zelenkov Y., IEEE Access 2026 Vol. 14 P. 20084–20099
While machine learning models have achieved high accuracy in predicting firm financial failure (FFF), they often function as “closed boxes” that fail to provide actionable guidance for decision-makers. Existing counterfactual explanation methods typically operate in the space of financial ratios (FR), neglecting fundamental accounting identities and implementation costs, thereby producing recommendations that are theoretically valid ...

Имитационное моделирование процесса выдачи кредита в региональном коммерческом банке
Ramenskaya A., Яркова О. Н., Цифровая экономика 2022 № 2(18) С. 72–81
To form a strategy for managing the lending process and credit risk, analysts of a credit organization need to have tools for modeling the lending process, which allows not only to assess the effectiveness of the lending process in the current situation, but also to assess risks in a changing economic environment. The purpose of this study is to ...

Agent-based modeling for benchmarking banking regulation regimes: Application for the CBDC
Нечитайло В. А., Penikas H. I., Model Assisted Statistics and Applications 2021 Vol. 16 No. 4 P. 261–272
COVID-19 pandemic challenges the sustainability of the modern financial system. International central bankers claim that banks are solid. They have accumulated significant capital buffers. Those buffers should be further more augmented by 2027 in line with Basel III reforms. However, disregarding such a consecutive rise in the banking capital adequacy requirements, the US financial authorities ...

Petrov A., Sergey Zheglov, Akhremenko A. S., , in: 16th International Conference Management of large-scale system development (MLSD).: IEEE, 2023. Ch. 1 P. 1–5.
The paper studies protest campaigns consisting of both days with protest activity and days without activity. A dynamical agent-based model has been constructed. Numerical experiments showed that repression reduces the surviving probability of the campaign, but moderate repression may increase the turnout for the campaigns that survive. ...

Dual Identity in Repressive Contexts: An Agent-Based Model of Protest Dynamics
Alexander Petrov, Andrei Akhremenko, Sergey Zheglov, Social Science Computer Review 2023 Vol. 41 No. 6 P. 2249–2273
Protest campaign movements are often carried out by coalitions rather than by homogeneous groups. Accordingly, an opposition member has both a narrow partisan identity and a broad allopposition identity. Seeking to prevent mass political participation, autocracies can repress protesters regardless of their group membership or apply the “divide and conquer” principle, targeting specific groups. Any ...
