A new formal approach to semantic parsing of instructions and to file manager design
Razorenov A., Fomichov V. A.
During roughly the last seven years, an increase of interest in semantic parsing of instructions in natural language (NL) could be observed. The principal applications of developed algorithms are NL-interfaces for interaction with robots and the personages of videogames, navigation in virtual space, and for developing programs by means of NL. However, the known algorithms are able to process only simple instructions, including one verb with dependent words. This paper has the following theoretical objectives: (a) to formally define in a new way the semantic-syntactic component of a linguistic database and semantic-syntactic structure of a NL-text; (b) to develop a new algorithm of semantic parsing of instructions satisfying the following conditions: (i) being able to process complex NL-instructions including several verbs; (ii) having a relatively compact form due to a high-level angle of look; (iii) being easy to implement and to expand; (iv) finding semantic-syntactic relationships in the input text without constructing a pure syntactic representation of the input text; (v) being convenient for processing texts not only from English but also from Russian, German, French and many other languages. The practical objective of the study was to develop a useful NL-interface to a file manager. A file manager with a NL-interface NLC-2 (Natural Language Commander - Version Two) has been developed. This study is underpinned by the theory of K-representations (knowledge representations) developed by the second author.

The paper shows an incompleteness of theoretical foundations of the Computational Semantics branches called Semantic Role Labeling and Frame-Semantic Parsing. This situation is a consequence of a seeming lack of a semantic formalism allowing to describe semantic structures of complex sentences and discourses pertaining to arbitrary application domains. It is concluded that the theory of ...

During last decade, semantic parsing of the instructions in natural language (NL) has become a significant branch of the studies aimed at creating semantics-oriented NL processing systems. A topical problem of the kind is designing file managers with a NL-interface. The principal attention in our previous papers was paid to creating new, more effective theoretical ...

An original method of developing the algorithms of semantic-syntactic analysis of texts in natural language (NL) is set forth. It expands the method proposed by V.A. Fomichov in the monograph published by Springer in 2010. For building semantic representations, the class of SK-languages is used. The input texts may be at least from broad and ...

Broadly Applicable and Flexible Conceptual Metagrammar as a Basic Tool for Developing a Multilingual Semantic Web

The paper formulates the problem of constructing a broadly applicable and flexible Conceptual Metagrammar (CM). It is to be a collection of the rules enabling us to construct step by step a semantic representation (or text meaning representation) of practically arbitrary sentence or discourse pertaining to mass spheres of human’s professional activity. The opinion is ...

SK-languages as a Powerful and Flexible Semantic Formalism for the Systems of Cross-Lingual Intelligent Information Access
, Informatica. An International Journal of Computing and Informatics 2017 Vol. 41 No. 2 P. 221-232
The first starting point of this paper is the broadly accepted idea of employing, as a promising methodology, an artificial semantic language-intermediary for the realization of automatic cross-lingual intelligent information access to natural language (NL) texts on the Web. The second one is the emergence in computational semantics during 2013-2016 of great interest in the ...

The Design of a Natural Language Interface for File System Operations on the Basis of a Structured Meanings Model
, , Procedia Computer Science 2014 No. 31 P. 1005-1011
Due to evolutionary increase of the software complexity, graphical user interfaces have been becoming more and more complex, and often this process encounters the restricted possibilities of reflecting graphics on a display. This paper describes an original approach to designing natural language interfaces for the action-based applications as the complements and alternatives to traditional graphical ...

We present an approach to detect differences in lexical semantics across English language registers, using word embedding models from distributional semantics paradigm. Models trained on register-specific subcorpora of the BNC corpus are employed to compare lists of nearest associates for particular words and draw conclusions about their semantic shifts depending on register in which they ...

Dendritic cells (DCs) vaccination is a promising way to contend cancer metastases especially in the case of immunogenic tumors. Unfortunately, it is only rarely possible to achieve a satisfactory clinical outcome in the majority of patients treated with a particular DC vaccine. Apparently, DC vaccination can be successful with certain combinations of features of the ...

SkoltechNLP at SemEval-2021 Task 2: Generating Cross-Lingual Training Data for the Word-in-Context Task
, , , , in: Proceedings of the 15th International Workshop on Semantic Evaluation (SemEval-2021). .: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2021.. P. 157-162.
In this paper, we present a system for the solution of the cross-lingual and multilingual word-in-context disambiguation task. Task organizers provided monolingual data in several languages, but no cross-lingual training data were available. To address the lack of the officially provided cross-lingual training data, we decided to generate such data ourselves. We describe a simple ...

This paper focuses on latent representations that could effectively decompose different aspects of textual information. Using a framework of style transfer for texts, we propose several empirical methods to assess information decomposition quality. We validate these methods with several state-of-the-art textual style transfer methods. Higher quality of information decomposition corresponds to higher performance in terms ...
