Исследования со "смешанными" методами (mixed methods research): интеграция количественного и качественного подхода
The article describes the capabilities of integrating qualitative and quantitative methods, named mixed methods research (MMR). Mixed methods research is a special genre of study combines qualitative and quantitative methods in order to solve wide range of research questions in one project.
The article is based on review of relevant academic articles. Authors show the history of qualitative and quantitative methodologies development and indicate the possible potential for combining both. It is showed the institutionalization of mixed methods paradigm as well as describes the main trends and relevant publications.
Authors present pragmatism as an epistemological foundation of mixed methods research. Pragmatism gives the understanding of how the greatest benefits from the combination of different methods can be achieved. Pragmatism indicates the priority of actions as a basis for knowledge. For pragmatics school is primarily how obtained knowledge is useful. From a pragmatic point of view, the research is a form of action in order to achieve the goal - answers for research questions.
Mixed methods research should be the result of the strengths of each approach and gained data should exceed the possibilities of the use of one method. This principle is the main argument of mixed methods research. So, the mutual cognitive capabilities are the main reason for the integration of qualitative and quantitative methods. The article also shows the five expected positive results from mixed methods research. Firstly is the triangulation of data (the procedure to confirm the results of different methods at the one study of the same phenomenon). Secondly is the complementarity of the data (the extension and refinement of the results of a method for the results of other methods). Thirdly is the progressive problematization (detection of paradoxes and contradictions that lead to the refinement of question / answer research). Fourthly is the development (the use of the results of one method to enrich the results of another) as well as extension of capabilities (a variety of techniques to study differentiated elements).
In this paper describes various research designs including 1) version of the convergent of the data; 2) the design of the additional coverage and 3) the principle of sequential contributions. The authors describe the existing approaches to integrating the results of qualitative and quantitative methods, the sequence of research procedures.
