This Is Robot Speaking: A Social Scientist’s Perspective on Human-Robot Interaction
Whether we like it or not, talking with a robot on the phone is now part of our everyday lives. What is the right way to respond to a mechanical voice, who should we blame when communication fails, and could AI make an ideal conversationalist? HSE sociologist Alisa Maksimova answers these questions and more, based on findings from her study of interactions between humans and robots presented in the book Adventures in Technology: Barriers to Digitalisation in Russia.

HSE University and Consortium Partners Aim to Take Human Capital Studies to New Level
On January 14, at the 2021 Gaidar Forum, which was held at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), HSE University Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov and leaders of three other institutions signed an agreement to establish the Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Center (HCMRC). The other co-signers were RANEPA Rector Vladimir Mau, MGIMO University Rector Anatoly Torkunov, and Dmitry Funk, Director of the N.N. Miklukho-Maclay Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Center will focus on that key areas of human capital studies that are of current global importance.

Measurement Invariance of Personal Well-being Index (PWI-8) across 26 Countries

This report examines the measurement invariance of the Personal Well-being Index with 8 items (PWI-8). University students (N = 5731) from 26 countries completed the measure either through paper and pencil or electronic mode. We examined uni-dimensional structure of PWI and performed a Multi-group CFA to assess the measurement invariance across the 26 countries, using conventional approach and the alignment procedure. The findings provide evidence of configural and partial metric invariance, as well as partial scalar invariance across samples. The findings suggest that PWI-8 can be used to examine correlates of life satisfaction across all included countries, however it is impossible to compare raw scores across countries.

This publication explores the ways of displaying guilt in the Russian language conscience. According to the National Corpus of the Russian language guilt is defined in different contexts as cause and bad act as well as feeling. As a cause of something wrong it is related to coincidence, national mentality, curiosity, love and fate; as a bad act it is related to fault, adultery, alcoholism and crime; as a feeling of responsibility for such wrongs, whether real or imagined, it is related to pang of remorse, conscience, shame and fear. And we can estimate the degree of guilt, as such, only in regard to any social norm as moral or penal law. In this way, the analyzed emotional concept is constant and variable at the same time: constant as an object of understanding, variable as a contextual meaning.
