The paper studies the influence of the semantic environment of the verb “light” on the development of its polysemy in diachrony. A diachronic approach to the phenomenon of polysemy allows us to trace the accumulation of lexical-semantic variants "through time" from the original values to the secondary, derived from the original one. The study of the dynamics of the development of word meanings and the meanings of its lexical environment allows to detect and to analyze the mechanisms of the interaction of language units at this language level. It is quite possible to trace it, relying on written sources, containing examples of the use of words in a certain lexical description, but also on data of historical dictionaries.
