At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Early Warning Signals for Landslides in Context of Self-organized Criticality

Ch. 886. P. 249–255.
Dmitriev A., Kornilov V., Batienkov R.

Numerous studies have provided compelling evidence that the probability distribution of avalanche sizes follows a power law, and that 1/f noise is present in the stochastic dynamics of landslides. We present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena within the framework of self-organized criticality theory, proposing a discrete-time model in the form of a sandpile cellular automaton on a fractal landscape. We also introduce temporal and spatial early warning signals associated with critical slowing down of the landscape as it self-organizes into a critical state exhibiting avalanche-like dynamics. The results of this study may be useful for those involved in landslide risk assessment and the development of landslide early warning systems.

Natural hazard database from Internet publications: text mining with a large language model
Derkacheva A., Sakirkina M., Kraev G. et al., /. 2026.
Comprehensive data on natural hazards and their consequences are crucial for effective for risk assessment, adaptation planning, and emergency response. However, many countries face challenges with fragmented, inconsistent, and inaccessible data, particularly regarding local-scale events. To address this data gap in Russia, we developed an end-to-end processing pipeline that scrapes news from various online sources, ...

Derkacheva A., Golosov V., Shvarev S., Natural Hazards 2024 Vol. 120 No. 3 P. 2847–2868
Recent studies reveal an ongoing world-wide increase in a number of slope instability manifestations and their positive correlation with human activity. The latter involves construction activity as one of the most common trigger or susceptibility raising factors. In this study we conduct a detailed analysis of an extensive and rapid transformation of a forest-covered mountain ...

Оценка селевого риска в экономических показателях на примере Сибирского федерального округа
Бабурин В. Л., Бадина С. В., Derkacheva A. et al., Вестник Московского университета.
