The article raises the problem of studying the borderland in the context of the new local history, the origin of which to postnonclassical model of science causes the task of constructing its object, which is, in particular, the borderland as a zone of intercultural communication. Shown the formation of new approaches of American historiography to the study of contact zones in the context of regional history and approval polycentricity; analyzed the possibility of transferring the principles of the study of the borderlands on the study of different regions with multi-ethnic / multicultural population. Focused attention on research practice study contact areas of the North Caucasus, which revealed the specifics of the local identity, due to the preservation of the social traditions of the highlanders, despite hard cultural assimilation. Specially analyzed the historiographical culture of the North Caucasus region as a result of inoculation of the European research model on the local folk traditions.
This article studies the physician's attitude to the historical background of their profession, as well as local history of the provinces in the Russian Empire. Using historical texts produced by medics the author identifies, in what way the history of medical profession in the 19th century was described, how did their histories correspond with the development of medicine in the West, and what caesurae were used to separate their narratives into several chronological pieces. The study is based on medico-topographical descriptions that help to clarify how and with what intentions the local histories of Russian imperial provinces were written, and what were the differences between them.
The collection consists of articles, presented during two colloquia organized by the RAS Institute of russian history. The first one named “Historical geography in modern humanities” was hold in the fall of 2009, and another — “Geographical surroundings as a factor of urban development: modes of impact, forms to manifestate, ways to study” — in spring of 2010.
