Bipedal hopping in birds and rodents: morphological and evolutionary aspects
We describe two previously unknown cases of birds hunting rodents in tropical forests of Southern Vietnam. Number of belly-banded squirrels ( Callosciurus flavimanus ), caught in wire traps, shows a strong correlation with the number of crested serpent eagles ( Spilornis cheela ). Oriental pied hornbills ( Anthracoceros albirostris ) hunt red spiny rats ( Maxomys surifer ) over elevated areas of tropical forest
Here I discuss a collection of animal bones, found on the two succeeding wooden pavements of the medieval Kozmodemyanskaya Street of Novgorod the Great. The pioneering study draws attention to the bones found in wooden street pavements as a valuable source of information on the life of the medieval city.
The aim of the communication is to report and investigate the discovery of the Steppe marmot lower jaw in the layers the first centuries AD in the ancient Greek city Panticapaeum. This is the first record of the marmot remains from the easternmost part of the Crimean Peninsula (Kerch Peninsula). Although the animal could have been delivered to the city from the northern shores of Aral and Black Seas due to the valuable meat and fat, there is still a high possibility of marmot inhabiting this part of the Peninsula at the turn of our era
Skull traumas are the most widespread type of deviations in populations of raccoon dog. Pathologies were discovered only in introduced animals. Оdontological anomalies have been found in all the inspected samples. The frequency of deviations can serve as generalized indicator of morphofunctional condition of populations
Here we present the results of applying the method of non-contact sexing of birds by the profile beak outlines to a rare flightless rallid from New Zealand – takahē. The graphic stage of the method made it possible to identify visual differences in the profile outlines of the beak of males and females. The reliability of the differences found was confirmed by a set of statistical analysis techniques that showed almost 100 percent effectiveness of the proposed method.
Приводится список видов гусеобразных, зарегистрированных на Тверских полях фильтрации. Обращается внимание на особенности их питания на указанной территории.
Approaches to the modeling of the Geospace of economic and ecologic activities, including a set of concepts, principles and models, are revealed. Basic and secondary categories of geospatial modelling are formulated. General and detaled principles of the modelling of territorial environmental situation are shown in order to monitor the environmental, economic and business activities. Geoecological territorial concepts and categories are illustrated. Various geospatical formalizms, required for different stages of monitoring and control of geoecological situation (environment assessment, modeling of geoecological situation, elaboration of recommendations for its normalization) are described. Models and methods to support the techniques of automatic analysis and control of territorial environmental situation are discussed
The area of green zones of Tver out of the list of Specially Protected Natural Areas has significantly shrunk due to the human activities. There is a wetland patch on the southern border of the city, which is inhabited by more than 30 species of animals and plants, included in the Red Data Book of Tver Region. The protection of this area could be achieved via organizing there the Wetland Ecological and Educational Centre «Avian Eldorado»
The morphometry of the beaver’s skull, found on the course of archaeological excavations in medieval layers of Novgorod the Great, is provided. The comparative analysis with ancient and modern autochthonous and reintroduced populations suggests the race of large beavers, once inhabiting Volkhov basin. Further studies are necessary to accept or discharge this hypothesis
Some details of hand skeleton morphology of the Early Cretaceous bird Confuciusornis sanctus are described. The leading role of the third digit in progressive adaptation to flight is mentioned. Traces of insertion of at least two primaries to the proximal phalanx of the digit mentioned are reported for the first time. Limited use by Confuciusornis its forelimbs for climbing in canopies is hypothesized. Ritual role of the enlarged claw of the second digit is possible.
We compare the population parameters of two common species of rats, Maxomys surifer and Niviventer huang, living in a partially disturbed tropical forest in the Cat Tien National Park (South Vietnam). Populations of M. surifer are characterized by a high proportion of young individuals and a small number of residents, which is associated with intensive population renewal processes. Populations of the N. huang, on the contrary, are distinguished by a large number of residents and a high degree of survival
Data on avifauna of Tver filtering fields is provided. It shows a rare example of human-induced increase in local avian diversity. 124 species of birds out of 253 recorded for the region of Tver along with the number of nesting rare and endangered species make the filtering fields of Tver a convenient scientific, pro-tective and educational polygon.
Bones of 17 species of hunting mammals, found on the course of long-term excavations in the medieval layer of Novgorod the Great, are analyzed. Hunting mammals are sorted into two groups - meat and fur animals (with intermediate forms) - according to the way they have been utilized and selection of bones, found in the city, its neighborhood and settlements of Novgorod Land. The future possibility to discover the complete skeletons of mustelids (stoat, mink, weasel), which have died of natural causes in the city boundaries, is noted.
