This article discloses the case method’s essence as a research strategy, the framework methodology and the research studies’ design in management. Strengths and weaknesses of case method usage in masters’ of management research studies are reviewed in this work. The author discusses the prospects of using case method in business education, problems that might be encountered in business research and compares teaching and research cases as tools to build students’ research competency. Practical guidelines on how to use case method in masters’ of management programs are given in the conclusion. This article discusses several aspects of case studies as a research method. These include research and teaching cases’ comparative analysis, methodology and research design, strengths and weaknesses of case study as a research method.

The article discusses the burning managerial issue — public environmental organizations’ concern. A situation of public environmental organizations’ concern in connection with the development of Arctic oil field Prirazlomnoe by Gazprom group of companies forms the empirical basis of the study. The author analyzed the available secondary data, conducted in-depth semi-structured and unstructured interviews with respondents from public environmental organizations and Gazprom Group of companies. The results of empirical research revealed the dynamics of public environmental organizations’ concern and the causes of public environmental organizations’ concern. These results provide an explanation for increasing environmentalists’ counter-actions towards a company, the activities of which involve environmental risks. The author proposed necessary measures for the management of public environmental organizations’ concern and indicated the areas for further research.
The case presents the project “Epsilon-2”, the construction of a plant that provides machine processing of aircraft elements produced of various metal alloys parts in Khabarovsk region. The project is initiated by the Russian Energy Group of Companies. The case includes the information concerning peculiarities of the company’s development, description of the Russian aircraft and machining markets, and main business models used in these markets. The project will allow the company to fill a market niche, but the high cost of the project, market risks and unstable economic situation in Russia in 2014 forced the top managers to rethink the project feasibility.
The case is appropriate for students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as during other programs on the general courses “Marketing”, “Management”, “Marketing strategy”, “Marketing management”. Courses focused on the management and marketing that will consider such fields as market analysis, competitive strategy, business models and value creation is also relevant.
The case aims to attain the following learning outcomes: to analyze the sources of competitive advantage; to analyze the value creation process; to assess the competitive position and ways in which business can develop; to identify the existing and potential competitors; to adopt the managerial decisions in the field of strategic management and strategic marketing in industrial companies.
