A method for and the results from modeling a film probe-shaping lens satisfying stringent mass-dimensional requirements and intended for use as part of an Auger analyzer equipped with a CMA are presented. The optimized electron-optical characteristics of the lens (the distribution of effective potential and the geometry of the electrode space) are obtained.

A review of recent works on spin valves is presented. A number of CoO/Fe1/Cu/Fe2/S multilayers (S = In or Pb) are prepared and studied in detail. The full spin-valve effect for the superconducting current in these heterostructures is realized for the first time; its sign-changing oscillatory behavior is observed, depending on the thickness of the Fe2 layer; and direct evidence of long-range triplet superconductivity is found.

A mechanism for achieving the terahertz negative conductivity on transmit time effects during ballistic transport of hot carriers in nanoscale semiconductor heterostructures was theoretically considered. It was shown that selection of the heterostructure potentialprofile can significantly increase high-frequency negative conductivity.

A quantum-mechanical calculation of the THz negative conductance of hot ballistic electrons in nanoscale semiconductor heterostructures has been performed. It is shown that quantum beats of the ballistic electron wave function induce an ac current in the structure, which can do negative work on the ac field.

The paper studies the effect of the dramatic fall in polymeric fiber strength as erosion increases under an oxygen plasma beam. At a relatively small fiber mass loss (20%), the breaking load is reduced by a factor of 20. SEM images reveal that fiber erosion is uneven, and show the deep local etching that leads to fiber breakdown.
