The article examines the relationship between power resource and rational behavior in history. It is shown that personal interest is expressed in socially useful economic activities of individuals only if they had no adequate power potential. This general principle is illustrated by examples of Russian medieval history that are associated with the specifics of the trade route «from the Varangians to the Greeks», with land ownership and changing social structure. Further the thesis of the strengthening of the connection between economy and power potential that helps to explain changes in the distribution of power, institutions and economic growth in the Western world in Modern history is elaborated and illustrated. Moreover, the author describes the social dynamics in situations when low social classes expand at social bottoms and, using their monopoly there, exalt.

The article analyses Yuriy Krizhanich and Ivan Pososhkov heritage as an example of mercantilism’s geoculture in world-system retrospect. The relevance of capitalist world-system’s hegemonic states as geocultural patterns for political economy doctrines is justified. The relevance of the Netherlands as a geocultural pattern for mercantilism as a transitional economic epoch as well as early political economy is demonstrated. But distinguishing features and consequences of Russian mercantilism resulted from peripheral position of Eastern Europe and semi-peripheral position of the Russian Empire within the framework of capitalist world-system are emphasized.

The article deals with the debate about the fate of capitalism in Siberia in the «Eastern Review» newspaper between I. I. Popov and L. B. Krasin as a continuation of debate about the fate of capitalism in Russia of the 1890s. The importance of the railway experience in heated debates about the «special» or «European» path of Russia’s development, and stressed that the debate has moved to the discussion of the national passage of well-defined stages of capitalist development. It is noted that nobody was able to predict recovery of the Siberian cooperative butter manufacturing despite the conflicting opinions about the prospects of Russian capitalism in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
