The paper discusses the key notions
and vocabulary used by the Chinese poet and intellectual Li Bo of Li Bai (8 с.) for the description of time and temporary continuum. Following the Tang period poetic tradition Li Bo implemented two groups of notions. The first one is represented by the direct indica- tion to the particular moment (“today”, “in the past”), the second one is represented by indirect description by some “signs” affiliated with concealed symbolic meaning, such as “the shadow of bamboo”, the “coocoo cry”, “the wind from the East”, “drinking dancing in the mountains”, etc. The continuum could be expressed by the binary oppositions like “past-present” (gu – jin), “late night – early morning” (xiao – xiao), “autumn – springtime” (qiu – chun), etc, at the same time “moon” became a symbol of eternal and unchange- able. By trying to overcome worldly discreet structures and to address directly to the temporary continuum Lo Bo establishes just a starting point (“ancient time” or “in the past” – gu) and a present moment point (“today” of “right now” – jin) without any events in the middle. This sudden and inversive transfer from “present” to “past” is expressed in the terms of “suddenness” (ou), “distance” (yuan), visualization of the “moon of the past times” (gu shi yue), etc. At the same time the immersion to the “past” is equal to the gaining of sudden wisdom and is the allusion of the attainment of enlightenment.
