The article describes the peculiarities of blogs of politicians in terms of topic, communicative aim, of author’s image, communicative future and language expression, with a special emphasis on the functioning of precedent statements. It is argued that the status of a special genre variety should be allotted to blogs of politicians. From the point of view of communicative purpose the blogs of politicians combine informative and evaluative potential. The strategy of self-presentation and positive political image creation in the politician’s blog make anonymity, characteristic of non-political blogs, impossible. The blogs of politicians possess lower interactivity in comparison with other types of blogs.
In this article we are talking about the possibilities of authorship identification and linguistic analysis techniques in determining the originality of the text. Methodology proposed in the article is based on semantic analysis of definitions "novelty", "originality", "creative nature" in conjunction with authorship identification analysis, that is analysis of linguistic characteristics of individual author's style. Politicization of legal discourse is one of the topical issues in cognitive linguistics, determined by politicization of the society. Legal discourse is one of the most politicized. The degree of its politicization varies from a priori politicized to simply politicized. But the problem of the level of contract law scientific discourse politicization is still not solved. Studying politicization of the English contract law scientific discourse, the author of this paper aims at defining some terms used to describe political framing of a text, she also introduces new terms to differentiate between axiological and political levels of the analyzed scenario. The paper discusses the methodology of quantitative evaluation of the level of politicization of the text and discourse in general, the criteria for differentiating between politicized part of discourse and overlap of political and legal discourse. Besides the paper offers the methodology of revealing politicized nucleus of the legal discourse and the methods for its quantitative evaluation. Political framing of the scenarios used by the authors of the texts belonging to the analyzed discourse, the model of logical levels of Bateson – Dilts and SEO –analysis of the semantic nucleus are the tools for research.
This article examines critical discourse analysis usage for political investigations. Special survey of literature, schedules and articles brings out strong methodological deficiency. Some argumentation on issues, means and limits of critical discourse analysis emphasize its prospects for political science development.
This article focuses on practical research conducted on the basis of an integrative attributional technique combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to text attribution and used in forensic authoring expertise. Qualitative analysis is a study of the author's individual style as a holistic construct, representing the author’s speech competences and the level of their mastery. Using this type of analysis, it is possible to create a linguistic model of the author's individual style. Quantitative analysis is an extraction of statistical data from the text. These data help to make attributional expertise more complete, comprehensive and objective.
The study described in the article is preceded by a critical analysis of the theory, practice and methodological basis of the forensic attributional expertise abroad, mainly in English-speaking countries – Great Britain and the USA – and in Russia. According to the analysis, the conclusion about the similar methodological base of attributional expertise in these regions has been made. The postulate on the need to apply an interdisciplinary approach to forensic attributional text study has been also formulated. The conclusions about the expediency of using statistical text data to objectify the results of forensic attributional expertise and increase the verifiability of conclusions have been drawn. The article has confirmed the statement about the important function of idiosyncratic parameters of the individual style of the author in text attribution.
The purpose of the study, the results of which are set out in the article was the definition of methods for the detection and identification of linguistic markers of tolerance/intolerance of verbal behavior. With this purpose the analysis of language and speech tools, used as a means of influence and self-expression, was carried out. The analysis was carried out on the material of political discourse (mass media). The following research methods were chosen: a statistical analysis of data (primarily relating to the quantity of fixed linguistic facts); content analysis (comprehensive interpretation of quantitative data); intent analysis; rhetorical analysis and linguistic analysis. The analysis revealed sociolinguistic and linguocultural base of qualification of degree of tolerance of verbal behavior and developed criteria for the qualifications of language/speech tolerance. The data and results obtained serve as a base for conducting linguistic expertise.
This article discusses ways of representation in the linguistic consciousness of Russia's image. By means of representation we understand the methods of defining the meaning of associative reactions to a stimulus word "Russia". We have presented a methodology for modeling of the linguistic consciousness according to the association experiment and analysis of the data, which allows to identify and structure the image of Russia, to represent the linguistic consciousness of the participants of the experiment. This image can be modeled as a kind of figure of knowledge: the model of the motion from the word-sign to the meaning, method of expression, the field of reference.
This article shows how urban public space and the surface of the subject to a protest letter. Urban public space can be considered as a subject of the protest sum of the surfaces, which can be superimposed on the text of the protest. The protest letter writers considered in the context of mass political protests in Russia, have been updated at the end of 2011, and entailed the development of street art activist practices that have become part of the political discourse.
The paper features the scholarly legacy of a prolific American legal linguist, Peter M. Tiersma (1952–2014) whose contribution to the development of this discipline is significant and highlights his scholarly works, stances on the history and formation of the English legal language and texts, as well as the interaction between language and the law – his primary research challenge elaborated on across his multiple research papers. Tiersma’s significant legacy covers, inter alia, such research fields as forensic linguist as witness and linguistic expert analysis, legal textology, courtroom discourse and legal communication, legal lexicography and terminography, to name but a few, which were merited by the scholar’s attention at different periods of his academic career. The article introduces Lawrence Solan’s remembrances of the late scholar whose contribution into exploring legal linguistics and discourse, given the international outreach and worldwide citation of the scholar’s works, cannot be overestimated. The ongoing topicality of Tiersma’s research areas is exemplified by references to works by forensic linguists from various countries.
The article is devoted to the problem of the significance of precedent phenomena in the realization of intolerant tactics in blogs of Russian politicians. The precedent phenomena used in the blogs of Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Sergey Mironov, Eduard Limonov and Boris Nemtsov on the Livejournal platform in the period 2014 to 2015 constitute the object of research. The functional peculiarities of the precedent phenomena as part of intolerant tactics have been chosen as the subject of research. In the course of research it was observed that precedent phenomena are highly popular in the realisation of the discredit speech strategy, which is gained through the exploitation of the communicative tactics of humiliation, mockery and accusation and the constitutive turns. Apart from these basic tactics, other intolerant tactics like intimidation, encouraging intolerance, legitimation of intolerance, intolerance towards intolerance prove to be essential in terms of exploitation of precedent phenomena. The analysis of the realisation of intolerant tactics revealed the common functions of precedent phenomena (negative qualification, expression, mythologisation and demythologisation). It has also been observed that there are two metaphoric models involving the cognitive potential of precedent phenomena: LIFE OF ALEKSEY NAVALNY – A FAIRYTALE and MODERN UKRAINE – FASCIST GERMANY. It is concluded that intolerance as a discourse characteristic of blogs of politicians can be gained through the use of precedent phenomena in combination with cognitive metaphors and stylistic devices.
The article is devoted to the problem of the role of precedent phenomena in the modelling of a politician’s image in intolerant discourse. The precedent phenomena used in the blog of Eduard Limonov on the Livejournal platform in the period 2014 to 2017 constitute the object of research. The functional peculiarities of the precedent phenomena within the framework of self-presentation have been chosen as the subject of research. In the course of research it was observed that precedent phenomena are central in building up the image components through the dominant speech actions, self-characterising and the “me to onlookers” method. The analysis of the source spheres of precedence revealed the crucial components of the politician’s image – the roles of an intellectual and a preacher. It has been observed that the target spheres of precendence commonly coincide with the groups alien to the author. It is concluded that within the self-presentation strategy precedent phenomena are used not only in order to project an image but also as signs of orientation and integration. These are needed to create the “friend / foe” opposition vital to intolerant discourse.
Associative organization is one of the models of knowledge storage in the memory of a person. In the course of our free associative experiment, a group of respondents was asked to respond to the given stimulus word. The received reactions to the word-stimulus clarify the relevance of different meanings of a multi-valued word for the lexicographer, the typical spheres of its use, frequency connections, allow us to reconstruct the semantic structure of the word. Words of reaction also contain paralinguistic information about gestures, facial expressions, intonation associated with the word; cultural information, precedent phenomena, actual cultural metaphors. Therefore, an associative article fixing reactions has not only a structural lexicographic, but also an ontological status. Its data can be used in medicine, cultural studies (for example, when reconstructing the historical-cultural type of personality). The aim of our research is to characterize the format of knowledge, which represents the structure of the linguistic cultural thesaurus. On the basis of an association experiment it is pos-sible to make a model of the verbal memory and linguistic consciousness of a group of testees. The article deals with reactions to the stimu-lus that presupposes the operation of self-identification. The means of constructing the meaning and referential areas of a language sign are revealed in the article.
This article shows how critical discourse analysis can contribute to the study of values as represented in text and talk. More specifically it looks into the role of values in discursive conflict frame manifestation and out-casting a certain group of actors. The role of values is seen as twofold: as a building blocks of conflict field and vis-à-vis the author’s axiological stance toward that field. The opposing poles of the conflict field are shown to be semantically built up of values and anti-values. As far as the author’s stance toward the conflict field is concerned, the putative reader is aligned into the sole value position of the dominant actor’s group, all other possible value positions, including that of the opposed group, being ‘muted’.
