Debates around cancel culture still continue; the problems of public bullying and pre-trial sanctions are becoming a serious social problem, analysed both in the academic environment and by public figures. The rise of cancel culture is blamed on the information society, but it is worth recognizing that the phenomenon of ostracism is not new at all. In this regard, it is assumed that bare criticism of cancel culture cannot be a panacea, nor can its weakly reasoned exaltation. The article attempts a historical and literary analysis of the phenomenon of social ostracism, to identify the goals and objectives of a social institution. The purpose of the study is to open a discussion within the framework of the urgent need for a comprehensive consideration of the phenomenon of cancel culture and the definition of its social functions.
