Understanding the Electric Double Layer at the Electrode-Electrolyte Interface: Part I – No Ion Specific Adsorption

ChemPhysChem. 2024. Vol. 25. No. 23. Article e20240065050.
Mazur D., Petr E. Brandyshev, Doronin S. V., Budkov Y.

We present a comprehensive mean-field model that takes into account the key components of modern electrical double layer theory at the interface between an electrode and an electrolyte solution. The model considers short-range specific interactions between different species, including electrode-ion repulsion, the hydration of ions, dielectric saturation of solvent (water), and excluded volume (steric) interactions between species. By solving a modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation and using the appropriate results of quantum chemistry calculations on the hydration of ions, we can accurately approximate the differential capacitance profiles of aqueous electrolyte solutions at the boundary with a silver electrode. The specific interactions between the ions and the electrodes in the systems under consideration are assumed to be significantly weaker than their Coulomb interactions. A novel aspect of our research is the investigation of the impact of short-range ion-water interactions on the differential capacitance, which provides new insights into the behavior of the electrical double layer. This model holds the potential to be useful for electrochemical engineers working on the development of supercapacitors and related electrochemical energy storage devices. It serves as a basis for future modeling of electrolyte systems on real electrodes, especially in scenarios where chemical ion-electrode interactions are significant.

Budkov Y., Kalikin N., Journal of Chemical Physics 2026 Vol. 165 No. 16 Article 164108
We derive the local pressure tensor generated by the original Rosenfeld fundamental measure theory (FMT) for hard-sphere fluids from an arbitrary infinitesimal deformation. The variation of a finite-distance FMT kernel is written via the line integrals of the local deformation gradient along the straight segment connecting its end points. The resulting symmetric pressure tensor consists ...

Exact screening constraints for theories of inhomogeneous electrolytes: Generalized Stillinger–Lovett relations and a nonlinear Ward hierarchy
Yury A. Budkov, Journal of Chemical Physics 2026 Vol. 165 No. 12 Article 124105
Exact theories of electrolyte structure must satisfy the nonlocal constraints imposed by electrostatic screening, yet these constraints are most commonly formulated only for homogeneous bulk systems and at the level of two-point correlations. Here, we develop a unified field-theoretic framework that extends them to general inhomogeneous ionic fluids and nonlinear charge correlations. Using a standard ...

Understanding the electric double layer at electrode–electrolyte interfaces, Part III: crystallographic-face dependence of silver capacitance in aqueous NaF solutions
Mazur D., Petr E. Brandyshev, Doronin S. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 577 Article 149729
The electric double layer (EDL) at a single-crystal metal surface is controlled not only by the electrolyte composition and the electrode potential, but also by the atomic structure of the surface itself. This makes the Ag(hkl)/NaF interface a stringent test for continuum theories of the EDL. In the third part of our series, we examine ...

Hall effect in electrolyte solutions: Self-consistent Debye–Hückel–Onsager theory
Budkov Y., Kalikin N., Journal of Chemical Physics 2026 Vol. 165 Article 064506
A self-consistent statistical-mechanical theory of the Hall effect in electrolyte solutions is developed by extending the self-consistent Debye–Hückel–Onsager (SCDHO) framework to crossed electric and magnetic fields. The theory incorporates non-local ionic charge distributions via Slater-type form factors, regularizing the Coulomb interaction at short range, and accounts for dielectric friction through ion-specific coefficients, employing experimental values ...
