‘Our Team Consists of True Leaders in Their Respective Academic Disciplines
The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

On extensive dynamics of a Cournot heterogeneous model with optimal response

Chaos. 2022. Vol. 32. No. 2. Article 023124.
Lampart M., Lampartova A., Orlando G.

The objective of this paper is the study of the dynamical properties analysis of an original specification of the classical Cournot heterogeneous model with optimal response; specifically, a new approach that considers ordinal utility instead of cardinal monetary amounts is proposed where the classical decision of quantity is disentangled from the decision on imitation. The analysis is performed by means of bifurcation diagrams, the 0–1 test for chaos, power spectral density, histograms, and trajectory analysis. For this purpose, a new perturbation parameter of the initial condition is introduced, and together with the intensity of choice parameter determining the share of responders vs imitators, the system is researched. Depending on and , extreme reach dynamics, and coexisting attractors, periodic and chaotic trajectories are investigated through massive simulations. Those dynamics represent alternation between stability, cycles and chaos in the market. As the dynamics are completely endogenous, it means that swings in economy are intrinsic to the system and that they may persist unless controlled.

О воспроизводимости анализа временных рядов на основе матричных профилей
Брычков М. Е., Незнанов А.А., Программирование 2026 № 4 С. 50–66
The matrix profile (MP) quickly became one of the most important time series preprocessing methods when it was introduced in 2016, facilitating the solution of a wide range of time series analysis problems, in particular anomaly and pattern detection problems. The high significance has led to the emergence of various tools for MP calculating, but ...

Distressed firms and loan guarantee programmes during the COVID-19 crisis
Bessonova E., Popova S., Fedulova M., Emerging Markets Review 2026 Vol. 75 Article 101564
To mitigate the shocks caused by the pandemic-related restrictions, many governments implemented extensive support measures for companies facing sharp declines in revenues. In Russia, loan guarantee programmes allowed many firms to apply for loans during the pandemic. As a result, the number of small loans soared. Participation in the loan guarantee programmes helped firms in ...

Linear dependencies, polynomial factors in the Duke–Erdős forbidden sunflower problem
Kupavskii A., Noskov F., Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 2026 Vol. 14 Article 124
We call a family of $s$ sets $\{F_1, \ldots, F_s\}$ a sunflower with $s$ petals if, for any distinct $i, j \in [s]$, one has $F_i \cap F_j = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$. The set $C = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$ is called the {\it core} of the sunflower. It is a classical result of ...

The expansion of digital platforms and ecosystems is reshaping consumption and the structure of modern markets. In the Russian context, a representative survey conducted by the authors indicates frequent online purchasing driven primarily by time savings, broader assortment and price accessibility. Platforms thus generate consumer benefits, including non-monetary gains that are not fully captured by ...

Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 2 Article 119245
This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

To spike or not to spike: the whims of the Wonham filter in the strong noise regime
Bernardin C., Chhaibi R., Najnudel J. et al., Probability Theory and Related Fields 2026 Vol. 195 P. 1823–1875
We study the celebrated Shiryaev-Wonham filter (Wonham, W.M., in J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 347–369, 1964) in its historical setup, where the hidden Markov jump process has two states. We are interested in the weak noise regime for the observation equation. Interestingly, this becomes a strong noise regime for the filtering equations. Earlier results of ...

Parametric Resonance and Chaotic Phase Dynamics of a Two-Contact SQUID
D. P. Chernyshov, A. M. Satanin, Russian Microelectronics 2025 Vol. 54 No. 8 P. 984–988
The phase dynamics of two Josephson junctions connected in series and subjected to a time-varying magnetic field is explored. It is shown that periodical modulation of the magnetic flux, which determines the effective energy of an united Josephson junction, can lead to parametric instability and chaotic phase dynamics. Using computer simulations, it is demonstrated that in the chaotic ...

On risk and market sentiments driving financial share price dynamics
Lampart M., Lampartová A., Orlando G., Nonlinear Dynamics 2023 Vol. 111 No. 17 P. 16585–16604
The goal is to investigate the dynamics of banks’ share prices and related financials that lead to potential disruptions to credit and the economy. We adopt a classic macroeconomic equilibrium model with households, banks, and non-financial companies and explain both market valuations and endogenous debt constraints in terms of risk. Heterogeneous market dynamics ranging from ...

Nonlinearities in Economics An Interdisciplinary Approach to Economic Dynamics, Growth and Cycles
Araujo R. A., Chen P., Giuliani A. et al., Springer, 2021.
This interdisciplinary book argues that the economy has an underlying non-linear structure and that business cycles are endogenous, which allows a greater explanatory power with respect to the traditional assumption that dynamics are stochastic and shocks are exogenous.  The first part of this work is formal-methodological and provides the mathematical background needed for the remainder, while ...

Конкуренция по Курно и по Бертрану: выбор стратегической переменной на примере автомобильного рынка России
Levina E., Pokatovich E., Современная конкуренция 2015 Т. 9 № 6 (54) С. 52–62
The paper analyzes oligopolistic competition in a market for a differentiated product. A comparative analysis of competition models by Cournot (output competition) and Bertrand (price competition) under prerequisites put forward by the authors shows that under Bertrand competition the price level will be lower. Whereas interrelation between firms output and profit is ambiguous (if goods ...
