The purpose of the review is to analyze the state of research on the use of the digital footprint of students to determine the formation degree of their competencies. In accordance with the parameters defined in the PRISMA declaration, the review uses the methodology of bibliographic research to study the WoS, Scopus and RSCI databases. When searching for articles published between 2014 and 2022, we analyze information obtained using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results show the prevalence of empirical research in the European and Russian contexts. The studies are quantitative in nature and, as a rule, use the methodology of surveys and questionnaires. It is proposed to continue research using big data technologies.
