When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Chandler Wobble and LOD Anomalyes in 2010–2020s
Zotov L., Sidorenkov N., Bizouard C., , in: Proceedings of the 19th Annual Meeting ofthe Asia Oceania Geosciences Society.: Singapore: World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd, 2023. P. 153–155.
In early 2000-s the amplitude of the Chandler wobble (CW) started to decrease and in 2017-2020 reached its historic minima, comparable only with the minima of ~1928 yr. In 2021 the CW appeared again. We demonstrate that the phase of the CW is changing now, as during 1920-1930s. Since 2010 it has changed almost by ...

Earth Rotation Variations and the Moon Apsidal-Nodal Effects
Zotov L., Sidorenkov N., Bizouard C., , in: Proceedings of the XV Conference and School (St. Petersburg, Russia, April 22–26). Problems of Geocosmos—2024.: Switzerland: Springer, 2026. P. 289–312.
Earth rotation in recent epoch shows anomalies: its rotation velocity reached decadal maximum in 2024; the Chandler wobble (CW) of the rotation axis disappeared in 2018–2020, then resumed with a phase changed by 180^\circ ◦; the ampli-tude of the Free Core Nutation (FCO) decreased since 2021 as well. We analyzed the CW amplitude modulations since the ...

Аномалии чандлеровского колебания полюса в 2010-е годы
Zotov L., Сидоренков Н. С., Бизуар К., Вестник Московского университета. Серия 3: Физика и астрономия 2022 № 3 С. 64–72
The Earth’s rotation is nonuniform: the position of the pole drifts and describes circles with the annual and Chandler (433 days) periods; the Earth’s rotation velocity also varies. In the beginning of 2000s, the amplitude of the Chandler wobble began to decrease and in 2017–2020 reached a historical low comparable only with the low of ...

Reconstruction of prograde and retrograde Chandler excitation
Zotov L., Bizouard C., Journal of Inverse and Ill-posed problems 2015 Vol. 24 No. 1 P. 99–105
Observed polar motion consists of uniform circular motions at both positive (prograde) and negative (retrograde) frequencies. Generalized Euler–Liouville equations of Bizouard, taking into account Earth's triaxiality and asymmetry of the ocean tide, show that the corresponding retrograde and prograde circular excitations are coupled at any frequency. In this work, we reconstructed the polar motion excitation ...

Regional atmospheric influence on the Chandler wobble
Zotov L., Bizouard C., Advances in Space Research (includes Cospar Information Bulletin) 2015 Vol. 55 No. 5 P. 1300–1306
From the maps of regional contribution to atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) over the period 1948–2011 (NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data) time domain excitation in Chandler frequency band was extracted by Panteleev’s filtering method. This permits us to investigate the evolution of the regional atmospheric influence on Chandler wobble. It appears that the temperate latitudes bring the strongest ...
