HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Nanoscale Welding and Strain-Engineered Photoluminescence of GaN Nanowires
Sharov V., Pavlov A., Eliseyev I. et al., Advanced Optical Materials 2025 Vol. 13 No. 30 Article e01821
Strain engineering is a powerful tool for the development of nanostructured semiconductor devices. In this work, the effect of high external elastic strain is investigated on the photoluminescence of GaN nanowires (NWs). Individual horizontal NWs are strained to bending strains up to 2.2% using an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe. Novel nanomanipulation techniques for mechanical ...

Корнилов В. М., Карамов Д. Д., Известия РАН. Серия физическая 2025 Т. 89 № 3 С. 402–407
An experimental study was made of local switching in submicrometer polymer films, the consequence of which is the appearance of quasi-one-dimensional conductive structures of nanoscopic dimensions. The switching area was visualized using conductive probe atomic force microscopy. ...

Model of Growth of Heusler-Alloy Epitaxial Films
Vorotyntsev I. V., A. E. Rassadin, Fomin L. A. et al., Journal of Surface Investigation: X-Ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques 2021 Vol. 15 No. 2 P. 389–395
The experimentally studied surface morphology of films of the Heusler alloy Fe2CoAl is compared to the theory of the formation of the fractal surface of films. This theory is based on the Cauchy problem for the simplified Kardar–Parisi–Zhang equation. It is shown that for the initial fractal shape of the film it can be solved ...

In this paper, the results of tests on the roughness index of fibrous semi-finished products and paper intended for the production of mass types of products (packaging materials, printing publications) performed by direct (atomic force microscopy). This indicator was measured by direct (atomic force microscopy) and indirect methods (Bendsen method). It is shown that the ...

Identification of montmorillonite particle edge orientations by atomic-force microscopy
Kraevsky S. V., Tournassat C., Vayer M. et al., Applied Clay Science 2020 Vol. 186 Article 105442
Statistical information on the edge surface area and edge crystallographic orientation of clay nanoparticle surfaces is essential for proper accounting of the protonation-deprotonation reactions as a part of mechanistic surface complexation models. A combination of atomic-force microscopy (AFM) measurements and molecular dynamics computer simulations made it possible to quantify the relative contributions of the most ...

Muslimov A. E., Butashin A. V., Konovko A. A. et al., Crystallography reports 2012 Vol. 57 No. 3 P. 415–420
The possibilities of obtaining ordered gold nanoarrays on sapphire surfaces with oriented nanorelief are demonstrated. The structures are morphologically described using atomic force microscopy data. A study of the angular dependence of the reflectivity in the visible range of electromagnetic waves has revealed some features which are likely to indicate surface plasmon-polariton excitation at the ...
