Neural Network Maps as a Method for Constructing Mathematical Models
Scientists from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute of Physics Belgrade, Serbia, are jointly exploring the application of machine learning techniques and neural networks to the study of nonlinear dynamics. Natalya Stankevich, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, spoke to the HSE News Service about this international project.

HSE Scientists Develop Method to Compress Large Language Models Without Losing Quality
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new compression method for large language models such as GPT and LLaMA that reduces their size by 25–36% without additional training or significant loss of accuracy. This is the first approach to use mathematical transformations—specifically, rotations of model weights—to make models more amenable to compression with structured matrices. The study results have been published in ACL Findings 2025. The code is available on GitHub.

The influence of taxes on inflows and outflows of foreign direct investment

Journal of Tax Reform. 2020. Vol. 6. No. 3. P. 244–255.
Drapkin I. M.

The article discusses the effectiveness of tax incentives for regulation of the level of foreign direct investment inflows (FDI) and outflows in the economy. Theoretically, changes in tax levels should influence both the profitability of investment projects and companies’ choice of locations for their production units. At the same time, transfer pricing opportunities in the world economy may neutralize the effects of tax changes on the level of countries’ FDI inflows and outflows.

The aim of the research is to study empirically the influence of tax levels in countries on bilateral FDI flows. Methodologically, this study relies on regression analysis. Two variables indicating the tax level of the economy are used: the share of total taxes on income, profits and capital gains and share of taxes and social contributions in total government revenues. The database includes observations over 71 recipients and 91 home countries in 2001–2016. The gravity approach is applied to construct the econometric model while the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood method is used to derive unbiased estimates.

The main results of the research are as follows. First, there is a negative relationship between the tax burden and level of FDI inflows to the country. Second, higher taxes lead to an increase in FDI outflows only in the countries with relatively low taxes, while in countries with relatively high taxes the opposite dependence is observed. Third, vertical (efficiency-seeking) FDI are much more sensitive to the level of taxes in the recipient country compared with horizontal (market-seeking) FDI. We have not found any evidence for the positive influence of tax differentials on bilateral FDI. The conclusion is made that tax regulation measures may be an efficient instrument for stimulating FDI inflows to the national economy.

Mapping core collaboration structures in research universities: a normalized co‑authorship network analysis
Matveeva N., Ferligoj A., Batagelj V., Scientometrics 2026 P. 1–20
Scientific collaboration among universities is traditionally studied by counting coauthored papers with different types of partners. Under this approach, the internal mechanisms of collaboration remain hidden and, without additional normalization, the results can be biased. In our study, we apply co-authorship network analysis to examine collaboration structures within university research networks. We use OpenAlex data ...

Not more appropriate when unpunishable: normative expectations resist institutional change
Zhuravleva T., Afanasev K., Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination 2026 P. 1–23
Punishment plays a crucial role in driving norm change by incentivizing compliance with evolving shared normative expectations. Punitive measures typically encompass two components: a communicative effect, which delineates inappropriate conduct, and an institutionalized procedure that facilitates sanction enforcement. This study specifically investigates the latter dimension, examining how the mere existence of a punishment institution influences ...
