Fair and consistent prize allocation in competitions

Management Science. 2023. Vol. 69. No. 6. P. 3319–3339.
Dietzenbacher B., Kondratev A.

Given the ranking of competitors, how should the prize endowment be allocated? This paper introduces and axiomatically studies the prize allocation problem. We focus on consistent prize allocation rules satisfying elementary solidarity and fairness principles. In particular, we derive several families of rules satisfying anonymity, order preservation, and endowment monotonicity, which all fall between the equal division rule and the winner-takes-
all rule. Our results may help organizers to select the most suitable prize allocation rule for rank-order competitions.

Bessonova E., Popova S., Fedulova M., Emerging Markets Review 2026 Vol. 75 Article 101564
To mitigate the shocks caused by the pandemic-related restrictions, many governments implemented extensive support measures for companies facing sharp declines in revenues. In Russia, loan guarantee programmes allowed many firms to apply for loans during the pandemic. As a result, the number of small loans soared. Participation in the loan guarantee programmes helped firms in ...

Linear dependencies, polynomial factors in the Duke–Erdős forbidden sunflower problem
Kupavskii A., Noskov F., Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 2026 Vol. 14 Article 124
We call a family of $s$ sets $\{F_1, \ldots, F_s\}$ a sunflower with $s$ petals if, for any distinct $i, j \in [s]$, one has $F_i \cap F_j = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$. The set $C = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$ is called the {\it core} of the sunflower. It is a classical result of ...

Non-discriminatory storefront of digital platforms and ecosystems: Consumer experience and regulatory frameworks
Kuzminov Y., Koshel A., Kruchinskaia E., Russian Journal of Economics 2026 No. 12(3) P. 311–334
The expansion of digital platforms and ecosystems is reshaping consumption and the structure of modern markets. In the Russian context, a representative survey conducted by the authors indicates frequent online purchasing driven primarily by time savings, broader assortment and price accessibility. Platforms thus generate consumer benefits, including non-monetary gains that are not fully captured by ...

Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 2 Article 119245
This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

Space-Time Fluctuations in a Quasi-static Limit
Bernardin C., Gonçalves P., Olla S., Mathematical Physics Analysis and Geometry 2024 Vol. 27 No. 7
We consider the macroscopic limit for the space-time density fluctuations in the open symmetric simple exclusion in the quasi-static scaling limit. We prove that the distribution of these fluctuations converge to a gaussian space-time field that is delta correlated in time but with long-range correlations in space. ...

To spike or not to spike: the whims of the Wonham filter in the strong noise regime
Bernardin C., Chhaibi R., Najnudel J. et al., Probability Theory and Related Fields 2026 Vol. 195 P. 1823–1875
We study the celebrated Shiryaev-Wonham filter (Wonham, W.M., in J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 347–369, 1964) in its historical setup, where the hidden Markov jump process has two states. We are interested in the weak noise regime for the observation equation. Interestingly, this becomes a strong noise regime for the filtering equations. Earlier results of ...

The optimal design of elimination tournaments with a superstar
Tabashnikova D., Sandomirskaia M., The Journal of the New Economic Association 2026 No. 2(71) P. 12–35
Tournament is a widespread tool for organizing competition and identifying the most effective agent. We study single- and double-elimination tournaments with heterogeneous players of two types: several regular players and a unique superstar. Players simultaneously choose efforts in each match, winning with a probability calculated with the Tullock success function, the costs are linear with ...

Некоторые замечания о требованиях к научной теории в контексте многомировых моделей
Karpenko I., Вопросы философии 2024 № 5 С. 140–146
The article discusses the problem of a correct description of reality in science and philosophy, taking into account the acceptance of the many-world hypothesis. Many-worlds are understood as modern physical hypotheses that allow the existence of other universes (many-world interpretation, chaotic inflation, string landscape, and others). It is shown that these models are likely to ...

Over-specification of small, borderline cardinalities and color in referential communication: The role of visual context, modifier position, and consistency
Natalia A. Zevakhina, Kseniya N. Dongarova, Shubina D. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2024 Vol. 15 Article 1417047
This paper reports on two flash-mode experiments that test redundant descriptions of small (2–4) cardinalities, borderline (5–8) cardinalities, and color in referential communication. It provides further support for the idea that small cardinalities are more salient (due to subitizing), less sensitive to visual context, and therefore give rise to higher over-specification rates than color. Because ...

The optimal design of elimination tournaments with a superstar
Tabashnikova D., Sandomirskaia M., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series EC "Economics". 2023. No. 263.
We study single- and double-elimination tournaments with heterogeneous players of two types: regular players and a superstar. Players choose efforts in each match with linear costs, winning with a probability calculated with the Tullock success function. We consider several designer maximization problems: total efforts, probability of winning the strongest player, and a weighted composed function. ...

ON CONSISTENCY OF BAYESIAN PARAMETER ESTIMATORS FOR A CLASS OF ERGODIC MARKOV MODELS
A.I. Nurieva, A.Yu. Veretennikov, Reliability: Theory & Applications 2022 Vol. 17 No. 4(71) P. 521–529
The consistency of the Bayesian estimation of a parameter is shown for a class of ergodic discrete Markov chains. J.L. Doob’s method was used, offered earlier for the i.i.d. situation. The result may be useful in the reliability theory for models with unknown parameters, in the risk management in financial mathematics, and in other applications. ...

Некоторые предварительные условия для создания «многомировой теории всего» и развития интеллектуальной интуиции
Karpenko I., Логические исследования 2023 Т. 29 № 1 С. 9–29
The article questions some of the classical principles of thinking based on traditional intellectual intuition. In particular, the intuitive acceptability of the requirement of consistency, of the “anything follows from a contradiction” principle, of the law of the excluded middle, and some others are under challenge. The literature, especially logical one, devotes many studies to ...

«Субъектность» в пространстве культуры и наяву
Petrovskiy V., Мир психологии. Научно-методический журнал 2015 Т. 3 № 83 С. 14–38
The article develops the author's concept of personality as multi-subject integrity. The basic concept of the proposed concept is subjectivity. The author understands by the subject an infinite source of “can”, the space of a potential constantly confirmed and actualized omnipotence (a mathematical metaphor for an infinite-dimensional cube of possibilities is accepted). Subjectivity is interpreted ...
