We develop an original method of student cheating evaluation that is based on the comparison of students’ grades on exams in class, homeworks and experimental homework. The data for the study is collected from the survey of 2013 sophomores of the International College of Economics and Finance at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Russia. At the end of the statistics course in addition to standard assignments (homeworks and exams) students were given experimental homework with the rule of limited cooperation among students. The violation of this rule was considered as cheating. The scale of cooperation is measured and then tested through different methods including the stochastic frontier; it reveals connection with the GPA level, students’ expectations of the cheaters’ share and their moral norms. We also find different behavioral patterns for high and low performing students as well as country specific context of student cheating behavior.
The paper demonstrates the potential of the stochastic frontier-based methods of performance assessment of non-profit associations. They are commonly used for productivity analysis and could serve as an adequate tool for such assessment, especially when dealing with numerous non-profits pursuing identical and clearly identified objectives. A case in point are homeowners associations (HOA), which are formed within apartment buildings to manage common property. Data was collected by a survey of 82 HOAs in Russias national capital Moscow and a large industrial city of Perm. Different techniques and robust checks are applied, exogenous parameters that influence HOA efficiency are revealed. Among those, physical conditions of the housing stock and ability of tenants to resolve the collective action problem in operating housing infrastructure were shown to be of primary importance. Overall, HOA, despite of their appeal and successful performance in developed nations, are not necessarily a superior option in countries and societies where civic capacity is in short supply, and housing stock suffers from wear and tear.
In literarure there is no single answer to the question, whether the growth of imports in industry leads to decrease or to increase the technical efficiency: possible effect of different mechanisms. In this paper we estimate the stochastic production frontier using firm-level data for food industry in 2005–2011, taking into account a possible relationship between changes in imports and firm’s technical efficiency. We use the «Ruslana» (Bureau van Dijk) database, which contains financial information on companies in Russia. Our results show that in food industry technical efficiency is reducing while import share is increasing.
Students’ perception of the labor market makes a great deal in students’ decisions concerning effort to study, work during university studies, etc. The aim of the research is to define whether students identify significant returns on effort with respect to wage after graduation. Moreover, it seems reasonable to single out other factors that students expect to influence their wage significantly. With the use of the data of Russian students’ questionnaire conducted in 2012 within the framework of the Monitor of Economics of Education project the regressions with the use of instrumental variables and stochastic frontier approach are estimated. The results suggest effort is considered as an influential factor in determining wage by Russian students if students’ incomplete awareness about labor market is taken into account. Besides, university quality, abilities, wage received by working students, region, specialty, family’s income and gender make the difference in the amount of wage expected by students. For additional analysis the 20% and 80% quantile regressions are built. According to the results, persons having the highest wage forecasts base them on the amount of wage offered to working students on the labor market and do not correct them subject to their effort, university quality and abilities. At the same time another group of students, keeping similar basis for expectation formation as a previously analyzed group, expect significant contribution of effort and abilities.
