In this article, the work of A. N. Ostrovsky is considered from the point of view of his search for theatrical universals and the circle of interests of the playwright in the history of world theater is indicated. The sources for the article were not only Ostrovsky's translations – an important part of his educational theatrical mission, but also the indications ("keys") dissolved in the playwright's own plays on the connection with the pan-European tradition.
