How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Supercongruences for rigid hypergeometric Calabi–Yau threefolds

Advances in Mathematics. 2021. Vol. 393. Article 108058.
Zudilin W., Long L.

We establish the supercongruences for the fourteen rigid hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefolds over Q conjectured by Rodriguez-Villegas in 2003. Our first method is based on Dwork's theory of p-adic unit roots and it allows us to establish the supercongruences between the truncated hypergeometric series and the corresponding unit roots for ordinary primes. The other method makes use of the theory of hypergeometric motives, in particular, adapts the techniques from the recent work of Beukers, Cohen and Mellit on finite hypergeometric sums over Q. Essential ingredients in executing the both approaches are the modularity of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefolds and a p-adic perturbation method applied to hypergeometric functions. On Arithmetic Mirror Symmetry for smooth Fano fourfolds
Ovcharenko M., / Series arXiv "math". 2026.
We introduce an explicit class of tempered Laurent polynomials in the sense of Villegas and Doran--Kerr in n⩽4 variables including all Landau--Ginzburg models for smooth Fano threefolds with very ample anticanonical class. We check that it contains Landau--Ginzburg models for various Fano fourfolds which are complete intersections in smooth toric varieties and Grassmannians of planes, ...

Mirror partner for a Klein quartic polynomial
Basalaev A., Journal of Geometry and Physics 2025 Vol. 215 Article 105538
The results of A.~Chiodo, Y.~Ruan and M.~Krawitz associate the mirror partner Calabi--Yau variety $X$ to a Landau--Ginzburg orbifold $(f,G)$ if $f$ is an invertible polynomial satisfying Calabi--Yau condition and the group $G$ is a diagonal symmetry group of $f$. In this paper we investigate the Landau--Ginzburg orbifolds with a Klein quartic polynomial $f = x_1^3x_2 + ...

Projecting Fanos in the Mirror
Kasprzyk A., Katzarkov Ludmil, Przyjalkowski Victor et al., Taiwanese Journal of Mathematics 2025 Vol. 29 No. 6 P. 1411–1494
A new structure connecting toric degenerations of smooth Fano threefolds by projections was introduced by I. Cheltsov et al. in “Birational geometry via moduli spaces”. Using Mirror Symmetry, these connections were transferred to the side of Landau–Ginzburg models, and a nice way to connect the Picard rank one Fano threefolds was described. We apply this ...

On homological mirror symmetry for chain type polynomials
Varolgunes U., Polishchuk A., Mathematische Annalen 2024 Vol. 388 P. 2331–2386
We consider Takahashi’s categorical interpretation of the Berglund–Hubsch mirror symmetry conjecture for invertible polynomials in the case of chain polynomials. Our strategy is based on a stronger claim that the relevant categories satisfy a recursion of directed -categories, which may be of independent interest. We give a full proof of this claim on the B-side. On ...

On the existence of nef-partitions for smooth well-formed Fano weighted complete intersections
Ovcharenko M., Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports 2023 Vol. 20 No. 2 P. 1405–1419
A nef-partition for a weighted complete intersection is a combinatorial structure on its weights and degrees which is important for Mirror Symmetry. It is known that nef-partitions exist for smooth well-formed Fano weighted complete intersections of small dimension or codimension, and that in these cases they are strong in the sense that they can be ...

Discriminants and toric K-theory
Horja R. P., Katzarkov Ludmil, Advances in Mathematics 2024 Vol. 453 Article 109831
We discuss a categorical approach to the theory of discriminants in the combinatorial language introduced by Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Our point of view is inspired by homological mirror symmetry and provides K-theoretic evidence for a conjecture presented by Paul Aspinwall in a conference talk in Banff in March 2016 and later in a joint paper ...

Mirror map for Fermat polynomials with a nonabelian group of symmetries
Basalaev A., Ionov A., Theoretical and Mathematical Physics 2021 Vol. 209 No. 2 P. 1491–1506
We study Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds (f,G) with f=xn1+…+xnN and G=S⋉Gd, where S⊆SN and Gd is either the maximal group of scalar symmetries of f or the intersection of the maximal diagonal symmetries of f with SLN(ℂ). We construct a mirror map between the corresponding phase spaces and prove that it is an isomorphism restricted to a ...

A Version of the Berglund–Hübsch–Henningson Duality With Non-Abelian Groups
Ebeling W., Gusein-Zade S., International Mathematics Research Notices 2021 Vol. 2021 No. 16 P. 12305–12329
A.Takahashi suggested a conjectural method to find mirror symmetric pairs consisting of invertible polynomials and  symmetry groups generated by some diagonal symmetries and some permutations of variables. Here we generalize the Saito duality between Burnside rings to a case of non-abelian groups and prove a "non-abelian" generalization of the statement about the equivariant Saito duality ...

Graph potentials and moduli spaces of rank two bundles on a curve
Galkin S., Belmans P., Mukhopadhyay S., / Series math "arxiv.org". 2020. No. 2009.05568.
We introduce graph potentials, which are Laurent polynomials associated to (colored) trivalent graphs. These graphs encode degenerations of curves to rational curves, and graph potentials encode degenerations of the moduli space of rank 2 bundles with fixed determinant. We show that the birational type of the graph potential only depends on the homotopy type of ...

A Plücker coordinate mirror for type A flag varieties
Kalashnikov E. G., / Series arXiv "arXiv". 2020.
We introduce a superpotential for partial flag varieties of type A. This is a map W:Y∘→C, where Y∘ is the complement of an anticanonical divisor on a product of Grassmannians. The map W is expressed in terms of Plücker coordinates of the Grassmannian factors. This construction generalizes the Marsh--Rietsch Plücker coordinate mirror for Grassmannians. We show that in a distinguished cluster ...

A rim-hook rule for quiver flag varieties
Kalashnikov E. G., Gu W., / Series arXiv "arXiv". 2020.
The rim-hook rule for quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian allows one to reduce quantum calculations to classical calculations in the cohomology of the Grassmannian. We use the Abelian/non-Abelian correspondence for cohomology to prove a rim-hook removal rule for the cohomology of quiver flag varieties. Quiver flag varieties are generalisations of type A flag varieties; this ...

Semi-Calabi--Yau orbifolds and mirror pairs
Chiodo A., Kalashnikov E. G., Veniani D. C., Advances in Mathematics: Scientific Journal 2020 Vol. 363
We generalize the cohomological mirror duality of Borcea and Voisin in any dimension and for any number of factors. Our proof applies to all examples which can be constructed through Berglund–Hübsch duality. Our method is a variant of the so-called Landau–Ginzburg/Calabi–Yau correspondence of Calabi–Yau orbifolds with an involution that does not preserve the volume form. ...

Dual invertible polynomials with permutation symmetries and the orbifold Euler characteristic
Gusein-Zade S., Symmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications (SIGMA) 2020 Vol. 16 No. 051 P. 1–15
P. Berglund, T. Hübsch, and M. Henningson proposed a method to construct mirror symmetric Calabi–Yau manifolds. They considered a pair consisting of an invertible polynomial and of a finite (abelian) group of its diagonal symmetries together with a dual pair. A. Takahashi suggested a method to generalize this construction to symmetry groups generated by some diagonal ...

Extended $r$-spin theory and the mirror symmetry for the $A_{r-1}$-singularity
Buryak A., Moscow Mathematical Journal 2020 Vol. 20 No. 3 P. 475–493
By a famous result of K. Saito, the parameter space of the miniversal deformation of the $A_{r-1}$-singularity carries a Frobenius manifold structure. The Landau-Ginzburg mirror symmetry says that, in the flat coordinates, the potential of this Frobenius manifold is equal to the generating series of certain integrals over the moduli space of $r$-spin curves. In ...

EA-Matrix Integrals of Associative Algebras and Equivariant Localization
Barannikov S., Arnold Mathematical Journal 2019 Vol. 5 No. 1 P. 97–104
The EA-matrix integrals, introduced in Barannikov (Comptes Rendus Math 348:359–362, 2006), are studied in the case of graded associative algebras with odd or even scalar product. I prove that the EA-matrix integrals for associative algebras with scalar product are integrals of equivariantly closed differential forms with respect to the Lie algebra glN(A)glN(A). ...

It is shown that the constructed cohomology classes define Cohomological Field Theory. ...

Rotational-symmetry in a 3D scene and its 2D image
Sawada T., Zaidi Q., Journal of Mathematical Psychology 2018 Vol. 87 P. 108–125
A 3D shape of an object is N-fold rotational-symmetric if the shape is invariant for 360/N degree rotations about an axis. Human observers are sensitive to the 2D rotational-symmetry of a retinal image, but they are less sensitive than they are to 2D mirror-symmetry, which involves invariance to reflection across an axis. Note that perception of the ...

Perception of 3D Symmetrical and Nearly Symmetrical Shapes
Jayadevan V., Sawada T., Delp E. et al., Symmetry 2018 Vol. 10 No. 8: 344 P. 1–24
This is an empirical study with a computational model. The human visual system uses priors to convert an ill-posed inverse problem of 3D shape recovery into a well-posed one. In previous studies, we have demonstrated the use of priors like symmetry, compactness and minimal surface in the perception of 3D symmetric shapes. We also showed that ...

Gamma conjecture via mirror symmetry
Galkin S., Iritani H., , in: Primitive Forms and Related Subjects — Kavli IPMU 2014.: Tokyo: Mathematical Society of Japan, 2019. P. 55–115.
The asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the quantum differential equation of a Fano manifold F defines a characteristic class A_F of F, called the principal asymptotic class. Gamma conjecture of Vasily Golyshev and the present authors claims that the principal asymptotic class A_F equals the Gamma class associated to Euler's Gamma-function. We illustrate in the case of ...

Self-organized criticality and pattern emergence through the lens of tropical geometry
Kalinin N., Guzmán-Sáenz A., Prieto Y. et al., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 2018 Vol. 115 No. 35 P. E8135–E8142
Tropical geometry, an established field in pure mathematics, is a place where string theory, mirror symmetry, computational algebra, auction theory, and so forth meet and influence one another. In this paper, we report on our discovery of a tropical model with self-organized criticality (SOC) behavior. Our model is continuous, in contrast to all known models ...
