This paper analyzes the semantics of Hill Mari converb in -meškə̈ which heads non-finite clauses expressing the temporal adverbial meaning of terminal boundary. Many reserchers of similar constructions note their non-trivial propositional behavior with negation. In this paper, based on field data from Hill Mari it is shown that the terminal boundary meaning emerges from an interplay between aspect and information structure, and the apparent propositional behavior with negation is a natural consequence of this interplay. Terminal boundary and related meanings of -meškə̈ are considered in a typological context, and the relevant semantic domain is visualized in a semantic map.

This paper addresses the issue of shortened form of negative markers in Kalmyk. Mongolic languages
have a very elaborate system of negative markers, partly inherited from the Old / Middle Mongolian negation. The current study is based on the field data from the Ketchenerovsky region, Republic of Kalmykia, as
well as on two corpora (Kalmyk National Corpus ...

The paper discusses two related aspectological topics. First section examines the ‘completive’ — i. e. ‘attainment of the internal limit’ — meaning (together with its counterpart ‘incompletive’, i. e. ‘non-attainment of the internal limit’). Its localization in the semantic structure of the utterance is determined: between aspect proper and actionality proper. Also, ‘completive’ can be included under ...

Semelfactive, delimitative, attenuative, and similar meanings are frequently combined in one marker across world languages forming a single semantic area. The article addresses the verbal attenuative in-al- / -alal / -ə̑ ldal in Hill Mari, looking into its morphonological distribution and polysemy. The marker allows for multiple (perfective) interpretations, including: delimitative (‘do P for a ...

In Indonesian, numerative complex may either precede or follow the noun. In my work, I will show that two factors determine the position of the numerative complex: specificity and information structure. Information structure is also found to be significant for related constructions, i.e. those involving “floating” of numerals. I conclude that the position of numerals ...

The Differential grammatical marking is a widely discussed topic in linguistic typology. Following works of Comrie [Comrie, 1981], Silverstein [Silverstein, 1976], Aissen [Aissen, 2003] and others there is a general assumption that the differential encoding can be accounting for by the markedness principles and that it is affected by pragmatic/discourse scales reflecting the degree of a NP/DP’s “salience”. ...

The topic of the paper is the semantics of semelfactive and delimitative in a typological perspective. We describe in detail how semantic behavior of these derivations depends on the actional type of the verbal stem. We propose to analyse semelfactive as a situation of minimal duration and delimitative as a non-final portion of a situation. ...

According to certain classifications, the converb in Tundra Nenets should be regarded as a non-canonical, varying-subject, and contextual converb. This paper addresses the system of purpose clauses in Hill Mari. It focuses on the conditions licensing omission of infinitival purpose clause subjects. Basically, these emerge where such subjects corefer to the matrix subject or indirect object. In cases of embedded predicate’s unaccusativity and direct object coreference, however, the subordinate subject can be omitted. Since this ...

It supports the view that the distinction between agentivity vs. non-agentivity in causatives is an important feature with various ramifications, as demonstrated in Comrie (1976), Talmy (2000), Shibatani (2001). It also motivates the role of the ‘control’ feature ...
